Whether you like the blues or not, you'll like this ██ ██ CD. ██ ██ Enjoy! ██ ██ ██ ██ Alvon Johnson: The Blues Grew Up ██ ██ If one had to describe this latest release by composer, ██ ██ guitarist and vocalist Alvon you could sum it up with the ██ ██ following four words: Laid-back, Elegantly mellow. Yes, my ██ ██ friends Alvon has taken the blues from its roots to a true ██ ██ feel of today's contemporary blues all within one project. ██ ██ Containing a total of 14 tracks ranging from simple jump ██ ██ blues all the way through a funky flavored cover of a Jimmy ██ ██ Hendrix's classic "Hey Joe". Alvons journey through the ██ ██ backwaters of Blues into today's sound isn't done solo: No ██ ██ far from it. Track four (which happens to be one of my ██ ██ personal favorites) entitled "Pretty Girl" brings in the ██ ██ considerable talents of Guitar Shorty. Alvon and Shorty play ██ ██ off each other in a guitar and vocal duet that clocks in the ██ ██ 132 BPM range and demonstrates clean Jump Blues at it best. ██ ██ Run on down to track six (6) which involves a good horn line ██ ██ background and sophisticated harmonies and you find Alvon ██ ██ has stepped into another forward moving sound. Then he ██ ██ rounds out the mix by pulling in contemporary artist Keb ██ ██ Mo', who masterfully demonstrates his talents on the Do Bro ██ ██ (track 10 entitled "Thank You"). ██ ██ Overall Alvon has presented us with a project whose name ██ ██ tells it like it is. "The Blues Grew Up" and Alvon was there ██ ██ helping it every step of the way. On the "Ole Give It To ██ ██ Mikey, Rating Scale" this one is an A. Not for its usability ██ ██ in the dance community but for its use of material, varied ██ ██ formats and overall presentation. In short it is just damn ██ ██ good blues that you are going to like no matter what flavor ██ ██ of blues you like.
