It's ║ │ │║ difficult to count the number of times that a ║ │ │║ band has completely flopped when bringing in a ║ │ │║ radically different vocalist, and yet bringing ║ │ │║ in a solid imitation of a principle figure will ║ │ │║ not silence criticism, as the checkered Ripper ║ │ │║ Owens era of Judas Priest will testify. However, ║ │ │║ insofar as Amberian Dawn is concerned, the ║ │ │║ logical comparison would be to that of ║ │ │║ Nightwish, given that they've spent most of ║ │ │║ their career in extremely similar musical ║ │ │║ territory and were faced with a similar dilemma ║ │ │║ of going the adventurous or the conservative ║ │ │║ route. In contrast to their fellow Finnish ║ │ │║ forbearers, Amberian Dawn didn't go completely ║ │ │║ into new territory with a vocalist that would ║ │ │║ have been better suited for pop/rock, nor did ║ │ │║ they find a perfect imitation of Heidi ║ │ │║ Parviainen, herself possessing an operatic ║ │ │║ soprano very similar to that of Tarja. ║ │ │║ ║ │ │║ For all the adventurous imagery showcased on the ║ │ │║ cover, "Re-Evolution" is not a groundbreaking ║ │ │║ album, in fact it possesses no new songs to ║ │ │║ speak of. Much like a string of compilations and ║ │ │║ EPs put out under the Iced Earth moniker, this ║ │ │║ band has opted to rerecord a collection of older ║ │ │║ songs and put their new vocalist Capri on the ║ │ │║ spot much as Jon Schaeffer did with Barlow and ║ │ │║ Owens as he had each of them perform material by ║ │ │║ the other as a sort of initiation to the band. ║ │ │║ Surprisingly enough, despite sounding extremely ║ │ │║ different to Heidi, Capri holds her own on here ║ │ │║ and actually moves Amberian Dawn out of ║ │ │║ Nightwish's shadow a bit toward a number of more ║ │ │║ overtly power metal oriented outfits from the ║ │ │║ Finnish scene such as Dreamtale, Burning Point ║ │ │║ and Kiuas with solid results, while at the same ║ │ │║ time also reminding a bit of the glorious period ║ │ │║ of Nightwish from "Oceanborn" to "Wishmaster". ║ │ │║ ║ │ │║ From a technical standpoint, the typical ║ │ │║ Amberian Dawn has always had more of an overt ║ │ │║ power metal flavor than any comparable works out ║ │ │║ of Nightwish, Epica or several other prominent ║ │ │║ figures. But what Capri's almost Celine Dion- ║ │ │║ like soprano does for a number of overt fits of ║ │ │║ Nightwish worship such as the dark speed fest ║ │ │║ with creepy orchestration aplenty "Circus Black" ║ │ │║ and the equally spooky carnival feel with more ║ │ │║ of a balladic feel "Charnel's Ball" is turn them ║ │ │║ into something a bit more original, though still ║ │ │║ musically derivative. But her voice particularly ║ │ │║ shines with the Stratovarius meets Gamma Ray ║ │ │║ speed work comes into play on "Incubus" and the ║ │ │║ mid-tempo metallic lustre of "Cold Kiss", as her ║ │ │║ more trumpet-like and attack heavy vocal ║ │ │║ inflections play a bit better off the percussive ║ │ │║ tendency of the riff work and the fast paced ║ │ │║ drumming. ║ │ │║ ║ │ │║ The difficult thing with an album like this is ║ │ │║ that any steady fan of this band will have heard ║ │ │║ all of these songs before, so it tends to hold a ║ │ │║ similar place as that of Gamma Ray's "Blast From ║ │ │║ The Past" or Iced Earth's "Days Of Purgatory" as ║ │ │║ something of a fringe player. And yet, I find ║ │ │║ myself thoroughly enjoything this album every ║ │ │║ time it plays, to the point of matching most of ║ │ │║ what this band has already set forth with Heidi ║ │ │║ at the helm. It's definitely more along the ║ │ │║ lines of how things might have been had ║ │ │║ Nightwish swept up Floor Jansen in 2006, rather ║ │ │║ than the fiasco that was Anette Olzon replacing ║ │ │║ Tarja. This is a band that still has a future, ║ │ │║ though those who have grown accustomed to ║ │ │║ hearing an overt Tarja emulation might be taken ║ │ │║ aback by the difference in vocal character on ║ │ │║ display here.
