Not ║ │ │║ because they are particularly frilly or complex ║ │ │║ or utilize odds and ends to get their sound ║ │ │║ together, no, it is rather that they manage to ║ │ │║ concoct this very varied yet cohesive mix of ║ │ │║ Prog Metal, Prog Rock, Power, electronics, ║ │ │║ insane catchiness, at times surprising elements ║ │ │║ and more, which at the same time perplexes and ║ │ │║ draws you in. ║ │ │║ ║ │ │║ Their previous effort "The Detached" had upped ║ │ │║ the Prog, lowered the Power and overall lost ║ │ │║ some of the catchiness that I had so liked in ║ │ │║ their first two albums, so when their self- ║ │ │║ titled album fluttered into my player, I was ║ │ │║ wondering what would await me. One big change ║ │ │║ happened in the line-up, where singer Jacob ║ │ │║ Hansen decided to step down from the mic, which ║ │ │║ led to bassist Henrik Fevre to take on the ║ │ │║ vocalist's role and he does his job very well, ║ │ │║ standing fairly close to Hansen actually, so ║ │ │║ there is one seamless transition to be beheld. ║ │ │║ ║ │ │║ Musically it is difficult to put into a ║ │ │║ nutshell, because this is one big freaking nut ║ │ │║ we are talking about, given what these Danes ║ │ │║ process here, but despite the myriad of ║ │ │║ influences the album never sounds disjointed or ║ │ │║ unfocused, which, I guess, shows the true ║ │ │║ mastery of penmanship in this case. Be it the ║ │ │║ straight and catchy Prog of opener "Hold Back ║ │ │║ Tomorrow", which is a near-perfect kick-off for ║ │ │║ this album, the crossover into Rock of "Facing ║ │ │║ Dawn", the surprising speed and aggression of ║ │ │║ "Desiderio Omnibus" or the almost Melodic Death ║ │ │║ Metal rhythm of parts of "Telltale Eyes" are ║ │ │║ proof enough. ║ │ │║ ║ │ │║ Once more I am assuming that ANUBIS GATE are ║ │ │║ telling a story here and the variety of styles ║ │ │║ that they mesh together reflect the different ║ │ │║ moods and chapters of this story (and if there ║ │ │║ is no actual story, it still sounds like one), ║ │ │║ being probably more "progressive" than the ║ │ │║ majority of their genre mates, since they do not ║ │ │║ try to dazzle you with mind-blowing scale races ║ │ │║ or more timing changes in a minute than AC/DC ║ │ │║ will surprise you with during their 200-year ║ │ │║ career by now, but by offering a very mature ║ │ │║ sounding album that manages to hold your ║ │ │║ attention over the whole duration of the album ║ │ │║ and also avoiding any lengths in their songs ║ │ │║ despite half of them exceeding the six-minute ║ │ │║ mark. ║ │ │║ ║ │ │║ Overall the amalgamation of immediate catchiness ║ │ │║ and underlying Prog Metal/Rock architecture is ║ │ │║ what in the end makes "Anubis Gate" such an ║ │ │║ interesting and involving album, showing ║ │ │║ remarkable maturity and cohesion while exploring ║ │ │║ many different avenues at the same time. On the ║ │ │║ surface you will get a very accessible and at ║ │ │║ times almost sweet-seeming album, but once you ║ │ │║ get past this, you will find yourself immersed ║ │ │║ in a world of wonderful music that lives and ║ │ │║ breathes emotions of different kinds and does ║ │ │║ not need any smokes and mirrors to let you ║ │ │║ experience them.
