Release Notes:
--------
Danny George Wilson is it appears an Americana visionary who has been ahead of
his time for much of his career leaving others to catch up and in some cases
cash in on the later success of the sub genre that he strayed into and then out
of again. However with ôStay Trueö Danny and his wonderful band have fused
blues, country and even gospel to provide a truly magnificent album. This fourth
album from the band could easily be a major label release from a band from the
USA with echoes of Southside Johnny, early Eagles, Steve Forbert, The Band et al
rather than a London based outfit. There is no criticism in that comment
however, but rather one huge endorsement of the authenticity of the band.
The songwriting is top drawer, apart possibly from the opening line from the
title song ôStay Trueö û ôIÆm not the best you could have gotten, some of my
teeth are nearly rottenö is unfortunate but this is a minor gripe and easily
overlooked. All tracks give the feel of being beautifully crafted with top
quality musicianship, production and mixing all of which will seem like old
friends after the second or third listen. The freshness of the music no doubt
has much to do with the fact that the album was recorded over just five days at
the Reservoir Studios in North London.
The joyous opening track ô(Never Stop Building) That Old Space Rocketö is a paen
to following your dreams with reference to an apparently true story of Danny and
his father hitch hiking their way to a Fabulous Thunderbirds gig. ôStop Thiefö
echoes Southside Johnny at his bluesy best but has the added twist of an
accompanying steel guitar and ôBreaking Outö moves along with gentle banjo
accompaniment. It would be easy to enthuse about all tracks individually but it
is no exaggeration to say that all of them are fantastic with not one falling
below the very highest standard.
The best recommendation that can be given here is to buy the album, sit back
with a glass of your favourite beverage and let the majestic sounds envelop you.
