Soul's debut album, "3 Feet High And Rising", was hailed as the future of hip-hop. With its colorful, neo-psychedelic collage of samples and styles, plus the Long Island trio's low-key, clever rhymes and goofy humor, the album sounded like nothing else in hip-hop. Where most of their contemporaries drew directly from old-school rap, funk, or Public Enemy's dense sonic barrage, De La Soul were gentler and more eclectic, taking in not only funk and soul, but also pop, jazz, reggae, and psychedelia. Though their style initially earned both critical raves and strong sales, De La Soul found it hard to sustain their commercial momentum in the 90s as their alternative rap was sidetracked by the popularity of considerably harder-edged gangsta rap. "Eye Know" was the fourth single to be released from De La Soul's debut album "3 Feet High And Rising". It peaked at number 14 on the UK singles chart. It was not released as a single in the United States. The song is an upbeat love song featuring guitar and horn samples from The Mad Lads' "Make This Young Lady Mine", whistle sample from Otis Redding's "(Sittin' On) The Dock Of The Bay", guitar, keyboard and vocal samples from Steely Dan's "Peg" and drums from Sly & The Family Stone's "Sing A Simple Song". "Buddy", which was the third single from the album, featuring the major members of the Native Tongues posse, including Q-Tip of A Tribe Called Quest, Jungle Brothers, Queen Latifah and Monie Love (the two latter only speaking parts in the extended mix). While Phife appears in the video itself and is heard in the extended "Native Tounge Decision" mix, the mix in the video eliminates his entire verse. On this London Records maxi-single, track 9 is mentioned but not listed as a track. The LP Version of "Buddy" on this release is a slightly different mix than what appears on CD copies of "3 Feet High And Rising".
