his debut for most hip-hop fans took place in 1995 when he was featured on a track from tha Alkaholiks' Coast II Coast (as Declaime). Affiliated with the group of rapper/producers who made waves later in the decade as Lootpack (including Quasimoto and Wildchild), Perkins wrote a few songs and, with Quasimoto at the boards, recorded an ode called "Flowers". After Stones Throw mogul Peanut Butter Wolf heard the acid-soaked R&B jam, he released it on 7" as part of the label's Jukebox 45's series; soon after, it became a favorite of DJs and tastemakers including Gilles Peterson. The full-length A Lil Light followed in mid-2003, with Expressions coming out in 2006. A year later, The Message Uni Versa appeared as a G&D release, the "G" being producer/musician/vocalist Georgia Anne Muldrow. The two would use their full names for the 2008 release Beautiful Mindz, then the Perkins album Holy Smokes appeared in 2009 with Muldrow handling all the production. Holy Smokes would come courtesy of SomeOthaShip, a label formed by Muldrow and Perkins. SomeOthaShip was also the title of their collaborative 2010 album, which was followed in 2013 by another G&D effort, this one titled Lighthouse. The solo album Dr. Stokely also arrived in 2013 with both Madlib and Muldrow on production. Filled with crooked, broken funk and positive lyrics, some beamed in from deep space, Fonk is DeclaimeÆs - aka Dudley Perkins - wild vision of a crossover record. It is so wild that he acts as if this effort could top Thriller during the highlight ôWarrior,ö which addresses MJÆs recent passing with 'Moonwalk look like a million miles high/Yeah, he was OK and his moves were fine/Now itÆs time for me to go for mine'. The left-field rapperÆs grand vision of hip-hop domination involves a mutated resurrection of the West Coast G-funk sound created by the albumÆs sole producer, Quazedelic, a kindred spirit for Declaime, as he can talk third eyes and pyramid power for as long as youÆd care to listen. Like everything Declaime does, there are moments of transcendence and moments of great clarity here, the latter being as simple as ôDadöÆs fantastic line 'Kids: It ainÆt about you anymore'. Elsewhere, fatherhood is addressed with ôSippinÆ on a cold glass of water, reminiscing about the birth of my daughter/Little Miss Sunshine, how she made me a father/Drove my life down, made it a little less harder/Whole lot broader, way much wider,ö possibly the most beautiful set of lyrics in the rapperÆs catalog. Georgia Anne Muldrow is a welcome guest on the three tracks she lights up, especially the great ôDreamer,ö which sincerely wishes 'May all your dreams come true/May all the sadness and madness be through'. Hard to believe the mind-expanding rapper could offer an album thatÆs so effectively comforting and hopeful, but Fonk is just that.
