Dudu Pukwana possesses the vocabulary of jazz and the spirit and fire
of Africa. Born and raised in racist South Africa, Dudu took his
extraordinary talent to England as soon as he realized where he was.

But the essence and soul of his homeland lives within him and the
many other muscians who have escaped South African apartheid. That
last includes Hugh Masekela. Jonas Gwanga, Dollar Brand and Chris
MacGregor, all of whom have worked with Dudu.

In London, Dudu's saxophone and arrangements have become as familiar
with folk and rock audiences as with jazz followers. His studio work
with members of Traffic and The Incredible String Band and other pop
groups well known, but his most creative work has been with Chris
MacGregor's Brotherhood Of Breath (for which he has written and
recorded many tunes), with Keith Tippett's Centipede and with Hugh
Masekela, with whom he recorded the classic "Home Is Where The Music
Is" (ABC "Blue Thumb")

During the early seventies, Dudu found time to lead Spear, a group of
South African musicians who retained the fervor and tension of their
homeland and brought that to the language of jazz. Mongezi Feza and
Louis Moholo were members of that group.

Moholo is master drummer. He is a comrade of many jazz drummers and
has been able to teach them rhythms of Africa. He has worked
extensively throughout Europe with Dollar Brand and Steve Lacy among
others.

Mongezi was a brilliant trumpeter. He was most certainly the alter
ego and constant companion of Dudu. A major musician who had the
respect of all who heard him play. But tragedy befell Mongs shortly
after the completion of the two sessions that make up this album. He
had nervous breakdown and was sent to a public institution that had
no heating to fight the November chills. Mongs contracted double
pneumonia, lay unattended and died soon thereafter. It is to this
brilliant and warm human being that Dudu lovingly and sadly dedicates
this album.

Within this line-up are three noted British musicians: Keith Tippett,
Nick Evans and Elton Dean. Dean, who plays saxello, a variation of
the soprano saxophone, first gained notoriety with Soft Machine.
Tippett is a brilliant keyboardist who leads the massive Centipede
and works frequently with his wife, singer Julie Driscoll Tippett and
other leading creative musicians on the British scene. Nick Evans is
a complete trombonist who has worked closely with Dudu in MacGregor's
group.

The music contained herein is basically self explanatory. Suffice it
to say that Dudu has digested the eras of jazz, American R & B, West
Indian music and African music to homogenize his own distinctive
sound. Ubaguile, Damond Express and Madodana embrace all of the
elements, but feel and the flow reflect Dudu's uplifting sense of
abandon. He absorbs the rules, digests the cliches, uses what he
wants and casts the rest aside. Dudu's spirit, like the spirit of
Africa, is irrepressible.

Tete And Barbs In My Mind shows the more 'out' aspect of Dudu's
writing and playing. The piece is dedicated to South African pianist
Tete Mbambisa and his wife Barbs. Bird Lives carries on the spirit of
Bird, but in Dudu's own loving and slyly humorous terms. Bent be-bop.

With Spear, Dudu recorded one album for Virgin. But this is his first
album as a leader with total license over material and personnel. He
acquits himself beautifully, taking a wide range of black music
heritage and turning it toward his own version. Diamond Express is
the long overdue debut of a fiery and passionate creator.
- Michael Cuscuna (original LP liner notes)

Recorded on two sessions at Island Studios, London, autumn 1975. This
album is dedicated to Mongezi Feza (1945-1975).
