release notes:
Brazilian blackened speed/thrash metal band, EVILCULT, will release its
third full-length album "Triumph of Evil" through Awakening Records.
Formed in 2016, EVILCULT has recorded an EP and two singles before
releasing its destructive debut full-length album "At the Darkest Night"
in 2020, followed by its equally blasphemous sophomore release "The
Devil is Always Looking for Souls" in 2023.
Featuring vocalist/guitarist Lucas "From Hell" Bittencourt, bassist
Renato "Speed Lobo-Guará," drummer Filipe Stress, and guitarist "Hell
Bordini," EVILCULT perform an amalgam of Teutonic thrash/speed and first
wave of black metal, with hints of trad metal, decorated with catchy
melodic riffs and shredding guitar solos. Bittencourt's savage vocals
sometimes alternate from angered, gravel-throated growls to piercing
Schmier of Destruction-esque squeals. By capturing a raw and primitive
production-handled by drummer Filipe Stress- "Triumph of Evil" sounds as
if it was forged straight out of the '80s underground metal scene.
EVILCULT genuinely pay homage to legendary pioneers of old school '80s
metal bands such as Hellhammer, Bathory, Sarcofago, and Sodom, while
also thriving on reviving the primitive and raw underground metal
worship alongside similar contemporary bands such as Whipstriker,
Hellripper, and Cruel Force.
Bittencourt on the writing process for "Triumph of Evil": "The writing
and composition process for this album was completely different from our
previous ones. It was an album composed entirely remotely, as each band
member now lives in a different part of the country. It was way more
difficult because of this, and also, we had a very tight deadline
because we have a European tour starting at the end of September, and
the album had to be ready before that. We had some drafts of songs and
several riffs, but putting everything together without rehearsing
together was quite challenging. We literally finished the songs and
lyrics in the studio. We did pre-production in two days and then did the
actual recording without any rehearsal."
On its first single "Midnight Ritual": "Midnight Ritual" was actually
the last song we wrote. I had in mind that I needed a killer song that
sounded like a "hit," or whatever you want to call it. A song with great
riffs and a catchy chorus. The song talks about a ritual guided by heavy
metal, with lots of blood, blasphemy and lust, which starts at midnight
and goes until dawn. It's total metal worship and nothing more. It ended
up sounding a little different from traditional EVILCULT, bringing a
freshness but without losing our roots."
On the amazing album cover artwork for "Triumph of Evil": "I was raised
in a Catholic family, so I always had that image of Saint Michael the
Archangel defeating the Devil in Hell nearby as a child. It's an
imposing image that demonstrates the power of "good over evil." So, I
needed to subvert that, since most of EVILCULT's lyrics and concept were
about that. We like to attack Christian religions, using all this
satanic symbolism to shock and provoke. So, I put the Devil defeating
and humiliating the Archangel with his own sword in Hell. It ended up
being a pretty awesome artwork, from a perspective I'd never seen
before. The lyrics for the title track "Triumph of Evil" came from this
concept. The artwork was painted digitally with brushes in Photoshop,
but completely by hand, since we reject all that AI stuff some bands are
using."
EVILCULT's "Triumph of Evil" is pure blasphemous South American metal.
