│║ Description : ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ Excelsis Biography ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ These guys from Switzerland, known as Excelsis, ║ │
│║ have been playing their very own brand of Metal ║ │
│║ since 1992. Back then it was a fine blend of ║ │
│║ Power and Folk Metal. Following some very ║ │
│║ positive ║ │
│║ feedback and great demand, the guys recorded ║ │
│║ their first album ôAnduin in the Riverö in 1996, ║ │
│║ which also counts as the official founding year ║ │
│║ of Excelsis. Even at a time when Folk Metal was ║ │
│║ still in its infancy Excelsis started using ║ │
│║ non-typical metal instruments, such as bagpipes, ║ │
│║ flutes and didgeridoos. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ Their success at home as well as abroad led the ║ │
│║ band to continue on their path and release ║ │
│║ their second album ôKurt of Koppigenö in 1998. ║ │
│║ It was the bandÆs intent to release an album ║ │
│║ based on local history and legend. For the ║ │
│║ first time, lyrics in Swiss German were ║ │
│║ incorporated ║ │
│║ into their songs. Many Maurer, former member of ║ │
│║ Krokus, exceptional musician and owner of a ║ │
│║ recording studio, helped the band with their ║ │
│║ first two albums and made sure the sound had the ║ │
│║ required power. The success of the sophomore ║ │
│║ album was even bigger than for their debut. ║ │
│║ With their worldwide distribution deal with ║ │
│║ Shark Records, good reviews from Argentina to ║ │
│║ Japan kept flooding in. The song ôDragonslayerö ║ │
│║ also impressed the jury of the Rock Hard Contest ║ │
│║ and allowed the band to include the song on ║ │
│║ Iron SaviorÆs album ôUnificationö. ║ │
│║ ôThe Swiss Dragonslayersö was a name that popped ║ │
│║ up in several press clippings and has stuck ║ │
│║ with the band ever since. To this day, the guys ║ │
│║ wear it with pride. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ In 2001, the album ôTales of Tellö about the ║ │
│║ Swiss national hero William Tell was released. ║ │
│║ It was self-produced by the band from start to ║ │
│║ finish. Due to the low budget approach and the ║ │
│║ lack of a distribution deal, its success was ║ │
│║ limited. Nonetheless, quite a number of songs ║ │
│║ remain live staples to this day. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ Motivated by their live success, the band ║ │
│║ continued to work on new songs and thus released ║ │
│║ ôThe Legacy of Sempachö in 2005. The typical ║ │
│║ Excelsis Folk Metal was further developed ║ │
│║ without losing touch with their roots. The ║ │
│║ resulting new album tells the story of another ║ │
│║ heroic event in Swiss history. Aurora Records ║ │
│║ released the album. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ Finally the band could also play several larger ║ │
│║ gigs at home and abroad, amongst them two ║ │
│║ appearances at Metalcamp Open Air (Slovenia) ║ │
│║ End of Dayz Festival (CH), Metal Dayz (CH), ║ │
│║ Eternity of Rock Open Air and Night of the ║ │
│║ Cross Festival (both in Italy), as well as ║ │
│║ Rocktown Open Air and Rockfabrik Ludwigsburg in ║ │
│║ Germany. They shared stages with Accept, ║ │
│║ In Extremo, Schandmaul, Haggard, Rage, Subway ║ │
│║ to Sally, Skyclad, Gurd, Dornenreich, ║ │
│║ Wintersun, Annihilator, Iron Savior, Pertness, ║ │
│║ Hammerfall à just to name a few. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ Having searched archives of Swiss history, the ║ │
│║ band developed a keen interest in Swiss ║ │
│║ mercenaries. Using these stories, they produced ║ │
│║ the album ôStanding Stoneö which was ║ │
│║ released in 2008. Helvetic heroics combined ║ │
│║ with Folk Metal sounds set a new high point ║ │
│║ in the bandÆs career. Thanks to their good ║ │
│║ relationship with the successful Swiss ║ │
│║ band ôEluveitieö, they could convince Chrigel ║ │
│║ Glanzmann to appear as guest musician on ║ │
│║ the album. Non Stop Music released the album in ║ │
│║ Switzerland while Twilight Records obtained ║ │
│║ the distribution deal for the rest of the ║ │
│║ world. At the time several concerts were played ║ │
│║ with bands such as Eluveitie, Korpiklaani, ║ │
│║ Finntroll, Black Messiah, Finsterforst, Samael, ║ │
│║ Heidefolk, Sepultura, Schandmal, Blackguard, ║ │
│║ Vreid and others at such festivals as ║ │
│║ Fiesta Pagana, Eluveitie & Friends, Forefathers ║ │
│║ Festival, Viking/Pagan Festival and others. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ Simply because the band wanted to try something ║ │
│║ different they released the self produced ║ │
│║ acoustic EP ôE cly angeri Liederö in 2010. The ║ │
│║ album, which was once again distributed ║ │
│║ by Non Stop Music, proved a success, which took ║ │
│║ the band by surprise. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ With the continued success of Folk and Pagan ║ │
│║ Metal worldwide the band decided to stick to ║ │
│║ their guns and continue on the path they set ║ │
│║ off on in 1996. The bandÆs brand new album ║ │
│║ received a professional production by Christoph ║ │
│║ Brandes at Iguana Studios ║ │
│║ (Necrophagist, Finsterforst, Unlight, etc.) and ║ │
│║ moves the sound to the next level with ║ │
│║ its unbelievable brutality. Once again the band ║ │
│║ successfully combined a story by ║ │
│║ Jeremias Gotthelf with their very own brand of ║ │
│║ metal. Thundering drums and ear splitting ║ │
│║ guitar riffs are complimented with more ║ │
│║ traditional instruments. The brutal singing, or ║ │
│║ as ║ │
│║ Christoph Brandes described it ôwild men with ║ │
│║ axes over their heads, running down the hills ║ │
│║ intent to split some headsö, with a number of ║ │
│║ passages in Bernese Swiss German, takes one ║ │
│║ inevitably back to the times of warriors and ║ │
│║ dragons. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ Get ready for future live battles with the new ║ │
│║ album and pay the band their dues they deserve. ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ The ôEmmentaler Dragonslayersö are back à more ║ │
│║ than ever before! ║ │
│║ ║ │
│║ Haaaauuuuuuuu ║ │
│║ ║ │
