- Release Notes ------------------------------------------------------------- -
On March 4th, 2014, the day will finally come for many that have been waiting.
IÆm not sure if you can call this a return of Fuel, but the band will be back
will be trying to reclaim their mark on the rock world. The new studio album
titled, ôPuppet Stringsö is not the Fuel you remember. This is a reincarnation
of the band with original front man Bret Scallions and all new members.
Remember itÆs been 10 years since Bret has fronted Fuel (Natural Selection)
with their last release having Toryn Green on vocals (Angels & Demons) but
again only 1 original member, songwriter and founder Carl Bell.
So the ultimate question on everyoneÆs mind is, can they pull it off without
Carl Bell. Well, your answer from this review is yes, they do and very well
but in a different way that you may think. The music on record breathes new
life into the band and energizes the band while maintaining that classic sound
we have all grown to love. You will forget all about that ôAngels and Demonsö
record, I promise. Scallions and company did a great job with the entire
record combining southern elements and mixing in their classic signature sound
to recreate the band.
I wasnÆt sure after hearing the lead single ôYeahö if this was going to be a
complete stray from the original sound or not. To me, ôYeahö is more STP
sounding than Fuel but when you listen to this album as a whole, you will get
it. ThatÆs why bands make albums and not just singles. ôSoul To Preachö, the
bandÆs first official single, is a great heavier rock sound that fits the Fuel
type and the new vibe on this album. It actually reminds me of the Sunburn
era. ôHey Mamaö follows next and this is where we get to the more southern
style song I was referring to earlier. This also has single material written
all over it though. The country vibe on this one, kicks into a big chorus that
has BretÆs raspy signature voice that we have been missing for a long time.
This will please fans of all ages and can win over some new ones as well.
ôWanderö is the most Fuel-esque sounding sound from their earlier days and a
possible favorite of the album. With a running time close to 6 minutes, this
one is going to hit home with the ôFuelies.ö BretÆs voice is strong as ever,
and this will hold true to their single material. It has the classic slower
high guitar start and a big beautiful chorus. ôCold Summerö maintains the hard
style we love. The is a head bobber and has even flow. ôHeadacheö is a like a
ôMary Pretendsö of this record. A solid rocker and great choice. On the
heavier side of Fuel we know. ôI Can See The Sunö delivers great performance
and will be a nice ôlighter or cell phoneö track live.
Bret is back and proves he is the true voice of Fuel on revival of the band.
Honestly, to me, you donÆt really notice too much that other original members
and songwriter are not writing for the band. The new elements they possess
will bring them back to the rock scene with new power and energy. I am sure
this will not please everyone, but what else can you ask for? The songs rock,
the singer is back and the tunes are as similar and as different as you can
imagine. Welcome back Fuel, we have missed you.
