T H i S . R E L E A S E ] ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ The current number one on the world music charts ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ europe (US too probably). ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ www.weltmusik.de/charts/ch0201.htm ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Imho an absolutely fantastic album that everyone ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ should listen to, but the latter is yours to ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ decide. But pls read one of the following reviews, ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ so you'll at least have a clue of what you could be ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ missing :-) (Or try out, say, 'Sew Argen' for a start) ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Some info on the artist to start with: ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Ejigayehu Shibabaw, better known as Gigi, is one of ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ the few singers from the Horn of Africa -- the ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ first since countrywoman Aster Aweke, in fact -- to ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ break through with a major-label release. Gigi grew ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ up in rural Ethiopia, listening to traditional and ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ church music, before moving to the capital, Addis ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Ababa, when she was 14. There, her musical horizons ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ broadened, hearing the local pop music "and all ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ kinds of American music we could get on the radio. ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ After that I went to Kenya, and there I was exposed ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ to a lot of different African music, a different ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ kind of beat." Returning home, she became a singer ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ with the National Theatre before making her debut ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ record, following which she worked with a puppet ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ company, whose touring took her to France. It was ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ there her real breakthrough occurred, playing a ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ world music festival called Imagineer which ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ resulted in a live recording that made her known in ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Europe. After returning to Ethiopia in 1997, she ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ was granted a U.S. visa. The New World offered ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ plenty of challenges and she grasped them all ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ eagerly, discovering jazz in Oakland and hitting ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ the road with countrywoman Aweke, "my favorite ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ singer." She made another album, One Ethiopia, ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ before coming to the attention of Palm Pictures ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ honcho Chris Blackwell. She was paired with ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ prolific producer Bill Laswell, who used talent ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ like jazzmen Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ behind her on Gigi, her debut for the label. ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ However, for all the electronic feel of the disc, ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ no loops or samples were employed -- everything was ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ played, and as live as possible. Gigi began ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ promoting the record by appearing at the 2001 WOMEX ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ world music conference in Holland, prior to a U.S. ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ tour. ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ --- ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Chris Nickson ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ All Music Guide ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=Brz59kextaq7q ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ --- ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Now some reviews about the album itself: ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ There are essentially two schools of thought when ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ it comes to world music: the purists who believe ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ that ancient musical traditions must remain ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ undiluted to survive, and the fusionists who ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ believe that it is the ability of artists to adapt ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ their cultural traditions to modern tastes that ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ will allow them to survive. Though often blasted by ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ traditionalists for his trademark world music ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ collusions, bassist/producer Bill Laswell has done ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ a remarkable job of straddling the lines dividing ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ these two camps, working with world music favorites ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ like the Master Musicians of Jajouka, Simon ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Shaheen, and Foday Muso Suso to concoct heady ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ stylistic brews that update their respective ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ traditions for 21st century audiences. Laswell's ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ latest discovery is 27-year-old Ejigayehu "Gigi" ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Shibabaw, a stunning Ethiopian singer whose ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ self-titled debut establishes her as one of ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Africa's most accomplished young artists. Her ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ mellifluous vocals are backed by an impressive ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ multicultural lineup that includes Laswell on bass; ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ guitarist Nicky Skopelitis; saxophonists Wayne ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Shorter, Pharoah Sanders, and Henry Threadgill; and ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ percussionists Aiyb Dieng and Karsh Kale. But the ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ emphasis here is on Gigi's voice, which moves from ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ soaring melodic passages to a breathy falsetto over ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ songs that combine her native traditions with ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ elements of funk, dub, soul, and West African and ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Indian sounds. From the exuberant buoyancy of "Gud ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Fella" to the syncopated urgency of "Aynama" to the ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ beautifully soulful balladry of "Adwa," this is the ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ rare debut that sounds like a fully formed artist, ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ ready and eager for her time in the international ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ music spotlight. ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ --- ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Bret Love ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ All Music Guide ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=Agtkmikkabb79 ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ AMG Rating: 4,5/5 !!! ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ --- ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Gigi ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Palm Music ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Crackling out of taxi speakers and the transistor ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ radios of Addis Ababa's many coffee cabanas, the ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ ethereal sound of "Gud Fella," the opening track of ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Ethiopian diva Gigi's latest album, wafts like the ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ mocca fumes that intermingle with the sweet ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ frankincense which burns 24 hours a day in the ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Ethiopian capital. "Gud Fella" can roughly be ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ translated as "Too Many Problems," but one need not ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ be an Amharic speaker to feel the lamentations of ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Gigi. ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Gigi (nee Ejigayehu Shibabaw) is no stranger to ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Ethiopian pop charts. She had an international hit ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ in 1998 with her reggae anthem "One Ethiopia," ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ apprenticed briefly with one of Ethiopia's other ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ great divas, Aster Aweke, and has credits in three ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ feature films. Now a resident of New York, she's ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ teamed up with master bassist and remix guru, Bill ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Laswell and avant-jazz saxman Henry Threadgill. ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ They lead an all-star cast of jazz greats and ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ eclectic fusionistas, including Pharoh Sanders, ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Herbie Hancock, Hamid Drake, Karsh Kale, and Wayne ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Shorter. Laswell and Threadgill offer more than ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ irrelevant neo-dub bed or acid-jazz crossover ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ appeal here. Their arrangements are tight and ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ remain true to the pentatonic scales of the krar, ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ the Ethiopian lute that forms the basis of so much ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Amharic music. As dubby melodica floats over the ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ heavy one-drop of the Laswell rhythm section, ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ sinews of flugel horn decay hauntingly into dusk. ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ The roller disco hustle of "Mengedegna" bounces out ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ of barbershop boom boxes, minibus stereo systems, ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ chatt houses and, yes, even poolside at the $200 a ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ night Addis Sheraton without losing its distinct ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Ethiopian flavor. ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Other standouts include the melancholic reggae of ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ "Abay" and "Nafekegn," an ode to the large ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Ethiopian community of Washington D.C. in which the ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ 3/4 time signature rhythm and flute work by ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Threadgill parody the fife and drums of our ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ founding fathers with the good natured lilt of an ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Ethiopian troubadour. "Sew Argegn" and "Abet Wubet" ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ harken back to the jazzy Afro-reggae of Laswell's ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ days with Senegal's Toure Kunda. From Start to ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ finish Gigi brings to the forefront the ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ bitter-sweet music of Ethiopia. ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ --- ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Matthew Doherty ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Rootsworld ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ www.rootsworld.com/reviews/gigi.shtml ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ --- ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Another female gem making her first appearance on ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ record is US-based Ethiopian diva Ejigayehu "Gigi" ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Shibabaw on the album Gigi (Palm Pictures). If the ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ truth be told, my first impression of Gigi was of ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ an album richly produced by a major name (Bill ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Laswell) for a major record label in order to ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ manufacture a buzz for a no-name singer with zilch ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ talent. But, after deploying all my critical ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ faculties, the only conclusion is that Gigi is a ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ very talented young singer going places, maybe even ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ more places that her predecessor Aster Aweke. For ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ one thing, unlike Aweke, Gigi uses the Amharic ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ language to engage the backing instruments; you ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ don't have to understand the lyrics in order to ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ appreciate the musicality of her voice. There's ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ none of the tricks (like a certain fluffy rendition ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ of Otis Redding's "Fa Fa Fa Fa Fa (Sad Song)") that ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ some emerging African singers have gleefully ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ employed to become visible in the West. Instead, ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Gigi's clear voice leads a heady Ethiopian ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ modern-traditional rhythm. She is as confident as ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ she is sweet. Moreover, Laswell's sure hand is ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ visible as he carefully juxtaposes Gigi's voice ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ against the background of sound that includes tabla ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ drums, French horns, talking drums, organ, horns ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ and melting back-up vocals. The result is a ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ well-crafted middle-eastern cosmopolitan bounty of ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ fat bass-lines, raucous horns, and snappy drums ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ that are guaranteed to go down as well in Addis ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Ababa as in New York City. The unique flavor of ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Gigi comes through when playing back-to-back the ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ tracks "Guramayle" and "Zomaye." But, then the same ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ applies to playing the entire the album. ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ --- ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Opiyo Oloya ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Afrodisc Rootsworld ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ www.rootsworld.com/afrodisc ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ --- ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ For more info about the artist and tour dates, ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ check out her website (see short infos above). ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ ET is the domain suffix for Ethiopia. ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Covers are included. ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Greetz, ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Cimarosa ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ ▓▌ ░ ▓████▓▌ ▓▌ ▓ ▐█████▓█ [ A B O U T .
