While many in other parts of ║ │ │║ the world moved onto alternative, grunge or ║ │ │║ heavier death/black pastures in the 1990's - ║ │ │║ German acts like Helloween and Blind Guardian ║ │ │║ set a standard in the European power movement ║ │ │║ that others from around the globe gravitated too ║ │ │║ and started to replicate. The quartet Heavenward ║ │ │║ also came from that German movement, releasing ║ │ │║ this debut album "Within These Dreams" in 1991 ║ │ │║ on Rough Trade. Shortly breaking up after their ║ │ │║ follow up "A Future Worth Talking About" in ║ │ │║ 1992, Pure Underground felt the time was ║ │ │║ appropriate for a re-release 21 years later - ║ │ │║ and so here it is. ║ │ │║ ║ │ │║ As a bonus, we get a new song "System Going ║ │ │║ Down" that opens the album with a heavier, ║ │ │║ thrashier stance - and the closing four tracks ║ │ │║ are demo cuts from 1989's "At First Nature" ║ │ │║ release, the second demo that helped Heavenward ║ │ │║ obtain a label deal. Songs such as the double ║ │ │║ bass filled, dog whistle high screaming "The ║ │ │║ Sky", rhythmically busy "Their Eyes" and heads ║ │ │║ down speed filled riff-tastic "Holding The Key" ║ │ │║ certainly stride hand in hand with early Blind ║ │ │║ Guardian, Helloween, and Heavens Gate: right ║ │ │║ down to the call and response chanting choruses ║ │ │║ and Stefan Kessel's expressive vocal register. ║ │ │║ Guitarist Bernd Groters also showcases ║ │ │║ remarkable restraint with his clean guitar lines ║ │ │║ - reminding me of classic Lethal or Queensryche ║ │ │║ for "Dreams In Disguise". ║ │ │║ ║ │ │║ The production value is very primitive and low ║ │ │║ in comparison to today's standards - but I do ║ │ │║ believe "Within These Dreams" contains valuable ║ │ │║ songwriting insights into the staying power of ║ │ │║ this movement.
