Release Notes:
HILLS HAVE EYES were born in warm and sunny Portugal, in a town called Set·bal
placed just by the river. It's all about playing rock music and having fun with
your friends. Love us or hate us - we are still here.
Hills Have Eyes will have listeners hooked with their new full-length album
æStrangersÆ right from the start. Their short introductory song, æPurdahÆ,
featuring the Pokemon battle music, draws you in from when you hit play before
it reveals a typical metalcore guitar riff, the same one which leads you in to
the rest of the album.
What stands out most from this album is that itÆs almost like a mixtape, with
each song on the album leading in to the next, but wirh each of the songs
sounding individual. Hills Have Eyes have captured something unique with this
album, with their vocals not as heavy when compared to other metalcore bands and
also with incorporating actual singing in with songs, such as æAll At OnceÆ.
Towards the end of the album, namely from æAll At OnceÆ onwards, the style of
the album changes slightly. This song seems to break the feel of the album being
like a mixtape and introduces the less heavy songs; æAnyway ItÆs GoneÆ which has
more of a post-hardcore feel, æHereÆs To YouÆ and the closing song, æDead EndÆ.
The latter of the three cleverly breaks up the album to show that the band, who
are clearly capable of creating good metalcore music, can also create good music
which has a lighter feel.
As well as mixing styles and techniques on the album, Hills Have Eyes have also
recruited two guest singers on two of their songs; Scott Kennedy, vocalist of
Glasgow outfit Bleed From Within on æThank You For The InspirationÆ, and Vasco
Ramos, singer of More Than A Thousand on one of the albumÆs more melodic
offerings, æAnyway, ItÆs GoneÆ.
The album peaks at with æHereÆs To YouÆ, which has a different feel to it than
the other songs. The beginning is a lot lighter than the rest of the album,
which was that was unexpected while listening to the album. However, after this
song the album goes back to the more metalcore feel of the song for the last two
before the album ends, allowing the last song to play out until the quiet at the
end of an album. Hills Have Eyes end the album perfectly, without overdoing the
mixtape feel of it.
Overall, the album is inventive. The mixing of different styles and techniques,
as well as throwing in two guest vocalists ,has proven to be successful to the
band. Hills Have Eyes are clearly confident enough to push the mould of typical
metalcore to create something which suits them and mixes styles.
