In Summer of 1994 they █ █ joined forces, choosing the name Humble Gods █ █ (taken from a poem Brad had read about the █ █ apocalypse) for their cacophonous collective. █ █ █ █ "Everyone was on break from their other bands," █ █ says Doug, "so we thought we'd get together: █ █ nothing serious, just fun, kick-out-the-jams kind █ █ of thing. It seemed like a good excuse to just █ █ get together and hang out. We had no intention of █ █ recording an album or anything. Suddenly things █ █ started rolling, and we found ourselves doing █ █ shows with Bad Religion, Sublime, and Foo █ █ Fighters." █ █ █ █ By 1995 Humble Gods had released their █ █ self-titled debut album on their own High Speed █ █ Media label. A record deal with Hollywood has now █ █ taken Humble Gods to a level they never █ █ anticipated. "This bad seed of an idea has grown █ █ out of control," laughs Doug. "We're signed to a █ █ label, for godsakes." █ █ █ █ No Heroes includes re-recorded versions of five █ █ songs -- "Animal," "Running Out Of Time," "Fucked █ █ Up," "High Speed," and "Glad I'm Not You" -- █ █ alongside ten brand new tunes. Throughout, the █ █ emphasis is on capturing the ferocity of Humble █ █ Gods live shows. "It seems like one of us gets █ █ injured at every gig," Doug laughs. "I've always █ █ like bands that fly by the seat of their pants █ █ where, at any moment, the stage could collapse █ █ and guitars could snap and everthing could blow █ █ up." █ █ █ █ In many ways, Humble Gods embody the old adage █ █ "expect the unexpected." Case in point: the █ █ unabashed victims' rights stance of the song █ █ "Animal" provides a jarring contrast to █ █ bandmember Ricky Vodka's relationship with serial █ █ murderer John Gacy. Ricky and Gacy began █ █ corresponding in late 1991; over the course of █ █ several dozen letters and phone calls the two █ █ became friends, and finally met each other █ █ face-to-face seven days prior to Gacy's execution █ █ in May 1994. Their meeting later became the █ █ subject of a controversial article published in █ █ the LA Weekly. █ █ █ █ Ricky never sought to inflame others by █ █ befriending Gacy; his motivation was curiosity, █ █ not controversy. "What Gacy did was horrible," █ █ says Ricky, "but I wanted to meet him so I could █ █ form my own opinion about what a serial killer is █ █ actually like. I expected to meet a monster, and █ █ instead I met a chubby man who was capable of █ █ being very charming and funny; kind of like your █ █ dad's buddy who tells corny dirty jokes. That was █ █ most frightening and fascinating thing about him: █ █ the monster can seem so average -- just a typical █ █ guy next door." █ █ █ █ Whether meeting pen-pals or making music, the █ █ group has a knack for stirring up raw emotion. So █ █ let the sweat drip where it will; let the fists █ █ fly where they will. Adventurous mortals take █ █ note: Humble Gods' No Heroes proves that risk has █ █ its rewards. █ █ █ █ In the summer of 1995, two sets of punk rock █ █ brothers and a good friend formed a band to █ █ reclaim the dignity of punk music. The punk rock █ █ genre had been so distorted that the uneducated █ █ music press was actually referring to the boring █ █ genre of flannel coated heavy metal grunge as █ █ punk rock! █ █ █ █ Grunge was not punk! Crack is not pot. █ █ The first shows were legendary, and the fire grew █ █ from there. █ █ █ █ Starting the set with song, Religion, insane █ █ bassist Spike X would bark at the crowd, " IF █ █ JESUS WAS A FAGGOT AND BUDDA SUCKED COCK," █ █ punkers ran for the door in horror. The assault █ █ on the Los Angeles club scene was unrelenting. █ █ People got hurt, fights broke out, the police █ █ were called, and most of the politically correct, █ █ liberal, Nazi music press. Hated them and puked. █ █ █ █ Who and what was this whirlwind of energy born █ █ from the ashes of Descendents, Dag Nasty, Doggy █ █ Style.. etc? It was the HUMBLE GODS. The very █ █ band that started a record label, recorded and █ █ released a CD, and played about 100 shows in █ █ their first year. █ █ █ █ Ask anyone who was at the historical barn show, █ █ which aired on Fox 11 News as some kind of plague █ █ against humanity. The band was crazy, pissed off, █ █ and on a mission. Often at some shows, Humble █ █ Gods would threatening and challenging the █ █ toughest crowd to the stage just to create more █ █ koas. Girls loved them, and old punks respected █ █ them and grunge kids were afraid. One performance █ █ in Hollywood In front of several music industry █ █ snobs, singer Brad X unhappy with his stage █ █ monitor mix, Picked up the 75lb speaker, King █ █ Kong style and hurled it into the mosh pit. █ █ █ █ Humble Gods shared stages with bands like, ICP, █ █ Sublime, No Doubt, Bad Religion, Foo Fighters to █ █ name a few. They soon got offered a big record █ █ deal with Disney's own Hollywood Records. This █ █ situation was exactly as they had planned, this █ █ was not a band pretending to stand for political █ █ correctness, and this was a band conducting an █ █ inside war on the music business. █ █ █ █ Then disaster struck. A close friend, and █ █ roommate of the singer Brad X, two time world █ █ champion sky surfer Rob Harris was killed in a █ █ sky diving accident while filming a commercial in █ █ Canada. Rob was a huge supporter and friend, it █ █ was a hard blow to the Gods. The same day of the █ █ funeral they signed their record deal, it was the █ █ best and worst of day in the bands history. █ █ █ █ By the New Year, after the death of Rob Harris, █ █ bassist Spike began to disintegrate. The band █ █ embarked on a US tour in the mid winter. This █ █ tour proved to be one tour too many for the █ █ previously road weary Spike, and one morning, █ █ after a brief meeting with the band, he quit and █ █ returned to Los Angeles. █ █ █ █ Jason Thirsk, former Pennywise bassist ,stepped █ █ in to record the now classic NO HEROES CD for █ █ Hollywood Records. The high energy of the band █ █ was captured on the CD and the band set out to █ █ conquer the world with newfound hope. █ █ █ █ Soon after the recordings Jason was found in his █ █ Hermosa Beach home, dead from a self inflicted █ █ gunshot wound, the band was crippled and wondered █ █ if they were best to move on with their lives. █ █ █ █ Life and death are both a powerful experience. █ █ █ █ Like a surviving pitbull after a fight, and █ █ citing their own slogan, LIVE WHILE YOU LIVE, the █ █ Humble Gods agreed to move ahead. After recruited █ █ punk rock legend Bianca from the band Butt █ █ Trumpet, the Humble Gods began touring with label █ █ mates Insane Clown Posse, in support of their █ █ Hollywood Records release, No Heroes. As we all █ █ know, the show must go on. During this period █ █ Humble Gods toured with Deftones, Downset, ICP █ █ and made 4 or 5 tracks across the United States █ █ and Canada. █ █ █ █ Unfortunately Disney began to take heat for bands █ █ like ICP and Humble Gods, and before you knew it, █ █ the label dropped them, just as the world was █ █ starting to take notice.
