release notes:
Formed in 2020, Finnish quartet Indemon satisfies that death/thrash
lineage that dips itself into both genres with few signs of
commercialism in sight. Their Fear of Living debut EP came out in 2022,
setting the stage for a full-length follow up with Reclaiming Chaos. Of
the four members, bassist Ville Kangasharju appears to have the most
seasoning - playing in a variety of black, death, folk, and
doom-oriented outfits like Tomb of Finland, Deathgoat, and Elvenscroll.
You can hear an aggressive nature to these songs, coming from a platform
that encompasses everything from late 90s/early 2000's Scandinavian
thrash to Stockholm-oriented death that penetrated the scene in the
early 90s.
A thick guitar crunch with the low-tuned atmosphere takes songs like
"Abuse" and "Shoot & Forget" to that next level of decadence - a
heaviness that crushes in that early Entombed meets The Haunted in a
headbanging / groove sideways context. The burly vocal presence of Joose
Riihelä should cause insanity over any listening device or live stage
that these songs appear on - galvanizing from the first extended scream
on the energetic opener "Bring Down the Light" which contains the right
tempo shifts from d-beat action to pit-oriented two-step sequences.
Guitarist Santeri Liesmala beyond his normal rhythms and electric layers
also delivers some wah-wah fueled sophistication in the lead department
throughout the record - as well as thoughtful acoustic lines next to an
inspiring, Corrosion of Conformity/Black Sabbath like power riff
template on the semi-ballad instrumental "Ruoja". Kudos to drummer
Patrik Kuitunen and his pocket awareness amidst the blasting / speed
versatility present in his playing - it's another intriguing element
most will latch onto. There's a visceral nature to these tracks that
cuts to the bone - teeth-shattering, spine-tingling musical components
that along with the forceful vocals makes a more groove-oriented cut
like "Passenger" just as intoxicating as the heads down thrash title
song finale.
Five years into their lifespan, Indemon certainly knows where they want
to go in terms of substance, style, and songwriting execution through
Reclaiming Chaos. They throw down a great mix of thrash with death and
groove elements proficiently - it's that Scandinavian touch that will
win over many looking for another newer artist to champion.
