Borne of an intensely creative imagination, Ioan Gamboa's Fire and Ice EP has provided the impressive foundations for a convergence of literary and musical themes. Launched in September 2012, the triptych of aural storytelling was supported by the global DJ elite and evolved into a trilogy of musical novellas in their own rights. The Garden of Bones included remixes from Ad Brown and Kacper Kostecki, while successor, Khaleesi saw remixes from Martin Etchegaray and Progreg. Now the series is concluded with the release of the beautifully enigmatic Sparkles - its combination of hypnotic rhythms melded with haunting, emotive melodies, now featuring alongside two world class remixes from Russia and China. From the suburbs of a city rich in cultural and historical heritage, Russian, Evgeny Suglobov under his Asten name has become a force to be reckoned with from his production base near the Moscow capital. Shunning the use of pre-packaged sounds and musical templates, he aptly describes his sound as melancholic, deep and airy with a lot of unique elements. An eclectic blend of progressive, tech and deep house sounds has seen his name feature on the powerhouse of Armin Van Buuren's ARVA imprint and the established big hitters of Moonbeam Digital, Silk Textures and Festival Lounge. Not content solely with music production, Asten's venture into label management alongside the Escenda production outfit has provided notable success with the Aura imprint continuing to grow and develop at rapid pace. Following the haunting vocal offerings of Strong in May 2013 and collaborative effort with Andrew Benson on When Toys Come Alive, Asten's remix of Sparkles for Particles is a typically innovative affair. Tribal percussive beats combine with house rhythms and deep sustained bass line as a series of gated pads and arpeggios thicken the atmosphere. Before long, we are treated to a stunning distorted lead line motif, echoing the themes of Gamboa's original to masterful effect as the track reaches its zenith. This is a truly high-class offering. Tukishiro Hikari, working from the Beijing Chinese capital, has developed a multi-talented creative persona that has found a home within the Japanese doujin culture. Sharing a passion for art, music and manga within a community of like-minded individuals has allowed Hikari to flourish further under the production name of Reimu. 2011's Wonderland signed to Silk Digital's Arrival imprint, saw support from the likes of Tom Fall, Terry Da Libra and Dinka, while receiving high profile remixes from David Broaders and Gregory Esayan in February 2013. Having already, remixed Maxi Valvona's Bonfires in the autumn of 2012, Reimu now returns to Particles with a typically dynamic and richly textured interpretation of Ioan Gamboa's Sparkles. A strong pounding beat provides the backdrop for a series of intricate melodies and soaring pads to combine to mesmerising effect in characteristic uplifting fashion while still retaining the key themes of Gamboa's work. Remixes from Asten and Reimu have ensured that Ioan Gamboa's Sparkles is set to shine brighter still in the coming months.
