Her singing is a classical, traditional one; yet in her voice fado gets a bright new glow, a fresh unique manner. She was born in the city of SantarΘm, the 30th September 1982. In 1994, young Amendoeira took part at the Lisbon Grand Fado Gala, where she got enthusiastic praise from the jury and the audience. Next year, in Oporto Gala, she came first in the ôFemale Interpreterö category. From then on, the young woman began performing around Portugal and abroad. In 1998 she travelled to Budapest, to take part in ôDias de Portugalö (Portuguese Days), an event promoted by ICEP. The same year, her first album, ôOlhos Garotosö (Playful Eyes), was released. She then became one of the ever youngest fado singers to have a CD published. AmendoeiraÆs show with fado legend Carlos do Carmo, at the Radio Alpha Auditorium, in Paris, opened her way to a series of performances round Europe and Africa, and also America, where she sang at the Commemorations of the 500th Anniversary of the Discovery of Brazil. 2000 was also the year of her second CD, ôAquela Ruaö (That Street), that got outstanding reviews. She also began singing regularly at Clube de Fado (Fado Club, one of most fΩted fado bars in Lisbon). Her growing international akowledgement got her an invitation to sing in Japan (on a 23 daysÆ tour), as well as in Utrecht (Holland), at the prestigious Muziekcentrum Vredenburg, in Fontenay (France), at the famed Salle Jacques Brel, and also in Moscow, at the Dom Cultural Centre. Meanwhile, in Portugal, Amendoeira was invited to take part in some of the best fado anthologies, such as ôNovas Vozes, Novos Fadosö (New Voices, New Fados) and ôNova Biografia do Fadoö (FadoÆs New Biography) û both from EMI/VC û as well as in the homage album to Moniz Pereira and in the sound track of TV serial "J≤ia de ┴fricaö (African Jewel). In 2003 she released her third CD, ôJoana Amendoeiraö that immediately got fervent praise from fado devotees, reviewers and audiences. This albumÆs promotional tour took Amendoeira to countries like Holland, Spain, France and Austria, and made her to be selected, among many candidates, to present her show at several World Music professional fairs, like Mercat de Musica Viva 03 (in Vic, Spain) and Strictly Mundial 05, in Montreal. Joana Amendoeira, who once was nothing but a promise, has become a living certitude, both in Portuguese and international music arenas. This fact was confirmed by her most recent award û the 2004 Revelation Award from Casa da Imprensa (the Portuguese Press Association) û and above all by her latest album, ôJoana Amendoeira - ao vivo em Lisboaö (Joana Amendoeira û alive in Lisbon), released in July 2005. This is her fourth, and the first to have been recorded before a live audience, at her first solo show on one of LisbonÆs old and illustrious stages, S. Luiz Theatre (November 2004).
