After much saturation by artists -- nee, entertainers -- overwhelming us with mediocre songs that ultimately amount to disco remixes, Miss Hill bears a substantive, soulful, and sincere tome that finally offers something with heart -- like hip-hop is supposed to be. Hill's journey begins with a heated salvo fired presumably towards her old Fugees mate Wyclef on the opening "Lost Ones." In an island accent against a bare-bones beat, she flings, "My emancipation don't fit your equation/ I was on the humble, you on every station/ ...Everything you did has already been done." In her usually luscious voice, the chorus hauntingly follows, "You might win some but you just lost one," which shouldn't bode well for those looking for another Fugees album. Her chorus on "Superstar" echoes her sentiments: "Everything you drop is so tired/ Music is supposed to inspire/ How come we ain't getting no higher?" Why the vitriol? Seems Hill has gone on a personal, introspective journey over the last couple of years, which included the birth of her son Zion (fathered by Bob Marley's son Rohan), which has affected the spiritual goggles in which she sees life. The songs of her solo album are the resulting gems from that sojourn, amazing bits from the other side. Incidentally, L-Boogie floats her sweet, sugary voice more than she actually raps. On the ode to her son, "To Zion," it's clear that while Hill might not have the chops of some of soul or jazz greats, her conviction and heart more than make up for it. On "Nothing Even Matters," one of her paeans to love, D'Angelo joins her on lead vocals and the Rhodes, adding a hypnotic element to the proceedings. Not that Hill can't rip the mike. She demonstrates that float- like- a- butterfly, sting- like- a- bee aesthetic she's always seemed to have with her rhymes, especially on "Final Hour," the title track, and "Doo Wop," where she schools her sisters in confidence games. The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill is a bridge between hip-hop's old and new voices, a link with its soul, old R&B, and reggae roots. Most importantly, it's an indelible effort of both style and substance that doesn't need a disco makeover to attract listeners. Indeed, while the tide propelled by her Fugees mates Wyclef and Pras may have a lot to do with the recent whoring of hip-hop, with this particular Refugee, it's a tide that is being shoved on its way out.
