They're more █ █ █ █ of a black metal country, what with the LLN and Deathspell █ █ █ █ Omega and Blut Aus Nord and many other weird grim cults. █ █ █ █ However, they've made some surprisingly good death metal █ █ █ █ over the years. Malthus is one great example. █ █ █ █ First of all, these guys are huge worshipers of Death, more █ █ █ █ specifically the later era Death when they started to play █ █ █ █ more progressive stuff. They replicate damn near █ █ █ █ everything, from the riffs to the guitar tone to the bass █ █ █ █ to the drum beats to the progressive song structures. If █ █ █ █ they played these elements badly, I would just call them █ █ █ █ cheap knockoffs, but they play the Death formula really █ █ █ █ well. █ █ █ █ The bass is rarely heard in death metal, so it's a breath █ █ █ █ of fresh air to hear the bass so prominently. Not only █ █ █ █ that, but this guy can noodle on the bass just as well as █ █ █ █ Steve DiGiorgio. The drums are also exceptionally █ █ █ █ well-played. There are so many great blasts and fills and █ █ █ █ complex rhythms, it would make Gene Hoglan proud. The █ █ █ █ guitars have got to be the best aspect of this whole album. █ █ █ █ Great riffs are interlaced into every inch of this █ █ █ █ fantastic presentation, and once in awhile, they play a █ █ █ █ heartfelt solo that would easily put a smile on Chuck's █ █ █ █ face. █ █ █ █ All of this is great, but I don't really like the vocals. █ █ █ █ They sound too much like thrash metal yells, so they don't █ █ █ █ really fit with the music. Not only that, but sometimes, █ █ █ █ the music lasts for too long. It would benefit greatly from █ █ █ █ a shorter playtime. Other than that, this album is a █ █ █ █ masterful replication of the later era Death formula.
