R I P P E R ' S N O T E S .. J0! NEW NERD *HYPE* *HYPE* As The Neptunes, Chad Hugo and Pharrell Williams are about as popular as producers can be. But the duo, along with rapper Shae, have aspirations above and beyond making someone else sound good. Back in 2002, they released an album, In Search Of.. under the name N.E.R.D. using music created by the band Spymob as a foundation that was then messed with, programmed and reconfigured. People were surprised to hear the way these hip-hop identified individuals made music that combined rock, pop and a bunch of other stuff in a way that wasn't only successful as an experiment, but also enjoyable as music. Well, N.E.R.D. are getting ready to release their second album, Fly Or Die, which will hit stores March 23. Fly Or Die won't just capitalize on the success of In Search Ofà though; these aren't guys who rest on past successes. Perhaps the biggest difference between In Search Of.. and Fly Or Die is the fact that Hugo and Williams play their own instruments this time out. Not only that, but they're recording the songs the way they played 'em and aren't turning them into programming fodder. It's a side of the trio that hasn't been seen yet and will be fascinating to hear how it sounds. Apparently, with Fly Or Die, N.E.R.D. will explore various sounds, including classic rock and '60s-style pop, as well as new wave. While N.E.R.D. has fun with genres and musical styles, the lyrics seem to be treading some pretty serious territory.
