Agony Defined 3:24 [Notes] As much fun as the goofball aspect of thrash metal's personality can be, it does require a dark side in order to keep its balance, a Slayer to offset its Anthrax and make sure that for every thrash fan in a flipped brim cap thereÆs one who looks like they have legitimately practiced Satanic blood rituals. As long as we have Noisem, that darker balance will be struck. Formerly known as Necropsy, Noisem is a quintet of teenagers from Baltimore who are casually making their older contemporaries look bad by comparison. Their debut album, Agony Defined (released by the consistently good Baltimore micro-indie A389) takes a basic thrash template, adds a generous measure of death metal, forges the alloy into something the size and shape of a railroad spike, and then spends 26 minutes hammering it between your eyes. ItÆs a remarkably lean album, even by thrashÆs typically minimalist standards. Overdubs are rare, although producer Kevin Bernsten makes sure that the barest moments hit with the same slab-like, bass-heavy density as the louder ones. NoisemÆs songwriting is just as uncomplicated, generally consisting of a riff for the verses, a slight variation for the chorus, and maybe a couple-bar breakdown. The only parts that verge on ostentation are the frequent guitar solos, whammy bar-abusing divebombs that are technically virtuosic and, more importantly, evil enough to justify their existence as something more than simple flash. It's a familiar formula, especially from the first couple of Slayer records, which came closest to perfecting the style. It's by no means inaccurate to compare Agony Defined to Slayer-- they scratch a similar itch-- but the band Noisem resembles most might be Iceage. Both groups consist of young musicians who despite-- or perhaps because of-- their youth are able to drill down to the core of a genre thatÆs been accumulating stylistic cruft for the past couple decades, rediscovering its most basic appeal. Noisem comes close to locating the ideal of a death-tinged thrash band the same way that Iceage does with the concept of a hardcore band. Like Iceage, Noisem's vocalist, Tyler Carnes, has an approach a little bit weirder and more individual than the styleÆs used to, often sounding like a melodic death rattle. ThereÆs some footage from NoisemÆs set at the most recent Maryland Death Fest that proves beyond doubt that Agony Defined is no fluke. From the video evidence theyÆre as scarilyy good live as they are on record. The thrash scene is still a niche, and NoisemÆs altogether a little more purely metal than the type of band that gets much traction outside of a specialist audience. But if thereÆs one metal band worth paying attention to right now, this is it. I know itÆs a greedy thought to have when IÆm still nowhere near tired of their first record, but I canÆt wait to see what they do next.
