Gradually, they figured themselves out: they became the anti- Beatles by emphasizing snotty attitude and raw sexuality over songwriting ability, because they knew their peers possessed far more of that. And it worked. Oasis, despite hype as "the next Beatles" to the contrary, should take the same course, but it hasn't yet dawned on them that they can't write Beatles songs either, though god knows they try. On Be Here Now, they mostly indulge the "Hey Jude"/ "All You Need Is Love" approach -- all but three songs are over 5:00, three are over 7:00, and one is even over 9:00, the idea being to lock into a mantra and drone out -- "na, na na, na na na na"- style. And that's fine -- lots of mediocre bands eke out a living recreating faint ghostprints with borrowed ideas, and the public, lacking any new dose of the real thing, accepts it as the best possible alternative. It's no crime. No, the real problem with Be Here Now is that Oasis has mired themselves not just in Beatle cliches but in even older, smellier ideas that have been hacked to death by thousands of bands before them. Witness the grating title track, which steals the one-chord pop riff thing from Elastica, who took it from Wir, who took it from Roxy Music, who took it from... The Gallagher brothers' pop instincts are solid, and that alone is an indication of some talent. But the key to creating lasting art is to mix old ideas with new ones in your own way, thereby creating a unique stamp. Nothing is accomplished if one merely repeats cliches, no matter how much you sneer or don bomber jackets in videos.
