New York City alt-rockers Plight Announce Self-Titled Sophomore Album, Out
June 13 via α La Carte Records and Pleasure Tapes.
PlightÆs second album doesnÆt just build on their debutùit reconstructs it
from the ground up. The self-titled follow-up to Plastic Sun sees the band
refining their sonic identity, fusing the anthemic crunch of æ90s power-pop
with the atmospheric sweep of classic emo. Think the earnest melancholy of
Sunny Day Real Estate colliding with the jagged hooks of Seaweed, all
funneled through a raw and immediate energy that feels distinctly their own.
Plightùrounded out by Matt Curtis (Guitar/Vocals), Anthony Perry (Guitar),
Alden Farrar (Bass), and Andy Rapp (Drums)ùpush their songwriting into
deeper, more dynamic territory. Urgent, melodic, and brimming with restless
momentum, the album channels the nervy catharsis of bands like Archers of
Loaf and Treepeople while carving out a space that feels both nostalgic and
forward-thinking.
PlightÆs latest effort doesnÆt wallow in nostalgia so much as it weaponizes
it, distilling the spirit of a bygone era into something vital and immediate.
The guitars shimmer and snarl, the hooks are razor-sharp, and CurtisÆ vocals
weave between contemplative and commanding. From the slow burn of ôSave
Yourselfö to the kinetic urgency of ôLate Shift,ö this is a record that feels
lived-inùfull of longing, tension, and fleeting moments of clarity.
Plight arenÆt just revisiting the pastùtheyÆre reinterpreting it in
real-time, filtering their influences through a modern lens and emerging with
something urgent, hook-filled, and deeply human. With Plight, they deliver a
record that hums with electricity, the kind of album that gets under your
skin and stays there.
The album will be available on 12ö vinyl and CD via α La Carte Records, and
on cassette through Pleasure Tapes.
RIYL: Weezer, Sunny Day Real Estate, Seaweed, 90s alt-rock
