After a seven-year absence, a band that were once signed to MadonnaÆs Maverick Records are back with a bang. ItÆs been 25 years since Showoff unveiled their Billboard charting self-titled LP. Fittingly, theyÆve come full circle on new EP Haverstraw. The band donÆt waste any time in breaking out of the blocks with a thunderbolt of vibrant 90s/early 00s goodness, on ôCrimson,ö an opportune opener for anyone that relished bands such as Fenix TX and NOFX. ôMiseryö exudes a grittier melodic punk sound, but one which is still equally adorned with ShowoffÆs classic pop sensibility. The weightier guitars bring texture as Showoff rue the toil and monotony of the 9-5. The thematic pop-punk staples are out in force as failed relationships are tackled on ôThe Day You Left.ö The bouncy, punctuating track walks the tightrope of rueful and hopeful. Throughout, Haverstraw there are abundant nods to some of ShowoffÆs peers, from Mest to New Found Glory to MxPx. ôInside Her Headö is one for fans of The Get Up Kids. The Windy City outfit show a proficiency of their craft while firing out hook after hook.
