Donovan Melero - Vocals Will Swan - Guitar Sergio Medina - Guitar Joseph Arrington - Drums Michael Franzino - Bass _________________________ "Brilliance of talent fly across Stay Lost, the debut full length from the super prog/post-hardcore group Sianvar. Five amazing musicians found time to collaborate as one collective movement, all at least similar within genres and audible palettes. This proves to be the main story of Stay Lost, blending four already successfully sufficient acts into one hammering, ten song release. Hell, it was even produced by the same person who has had their hands in the other bands the members are from (Dryw Owens). ItÆs yet another successful outlet for everyone included, albeit pulling the best parts of everyoneÆs strong points and weaving them into a dreamcatcher ù keeping out the nightmares of the scheduling, drama and just making music. Maybe thatÆs why they called the record Stay Lost, finding a reason to be in fear of everything. ItÆs hard to survive in this industry and yet all the members behind Sianvar subvert that by continuously outsourcing their creative intellect into massive projects. Stay Lost doesnÆt fall short in sounding like a masterpiece. ItÆs a stroke of art that rides progressive movements with fluttering vocals and mind boggling instrumentation. The drumming rarely forms to a specific pattern, creating the first layer of chaos for Sianvar to ride through. The guitars pierce the ears with flying leads and crisp tones. The bass finds a way to pulse in between, adding more rhythmic foundations to bounce with the drums. While this is happening the vocals cut through all of this with the signature Hail The Sun piercings. Which, for fans of the genre, makes it all the more worthwhile to hear. We already have a Dance Gavin Dance record from last year, a Hail The Sun record this year and an upcoming A Lot Like Birds record on the way. Combine that with Stay Lost and it is the West Coast takeover. ôStay Lostö is a bold opener, shying away from being quick to itÆs punch, instead building to a winding series of movements that take the listener on an audible roller coaster. Before the introspective clean break the song was machine gunning through the audible wall, leaving nothing but audible chaos behind. ôOmniphobiaöÆs guitar parts are almost psychedelic in nature, being lathered in effects before spinning through maddening licks. Will Swan and Sergio Medina pack assaults of riffs that sweep across movements with mind blowing craftiness, like a musical Macgyver. As the song closes there is a grandiose fight for the same melody, powerfully punching the eardrums of everyone standing to close; itÆs an earthquake. For Donovan Melero to find harmonious paths to sing over amazes the listener, finding ways to make the songs pop in anthemic, eccentric ways. ItÆs the individual prowess of Sianvar to continually bend songs their own ways that keeps Stay Lost interesting ù as long as youÆre willing to pay close attention. ôBedRootsö is drenched with heavy bass parts, finding a space between the discordant guitars to make a stand of its own. It is the low rhythm ends of songs ù in comparison to many of the bright, piercing guitars ù that really fascinates at times, with Joseph Arrington and Michael Franzino showing their tight woven framework that comes from playing with each other for years. Their own accents helps songs like ôBedRootsö and ôPsychosis Succumbingö shine. When listening to a project like Sianvar, itÆs easy to get swept away by the main melodies, but careful attention to detail reveal how layered Stay Lost is, bursting with more to find upon each consecutive play through. In a way, SianvarÆs debut plays out like a maddening orchestration, with an over the top aptitude for syncopation and movements. ôStay Scaredö closes the record with a fury of things happening (IMO one of the best tunes across the album): guitar scrapes, atypical drum patterns, high end vocals and twinkling guitar licks full of melody. ItÆs an attribute that makes Stay Lost entirely unique, helping Sianvar be, well, Sianvar." ________________________ "Sianvar are a supergroup of sorts. The band is a collaborative project between members of Dance Gavin Dance, A Lot Like Birds, Stolas and Hail the Sun. All of these groups turn out consistently solid material, yet when the band released their debut EP, something was amiss. The music was okay, but it didnÆt feel like the pieces were in their proper places just yet. Now, with their debut full-length Stay Lost, Sianvar have found their groove that allows them to harness elements of all the individual bands that theyÆre composed of to make music that sounds one-of-a-kind. Sianvar seems to contain the essence of swancore. Hell, the group has Will Swan in it! For those unaware, swancore is a subgenre of music that includes groups who make music similar in nature to Dance Gavin Dance, as that is WillÆs main band. The label that Sianvar are on is an imprint of WillÆs called Blue Swan Records and with Stay Lost, it feels like the label has given birth to their definitive swancore band. All the bands on the label may not sound like Sianvar or this record, but the technical, melodic riffing, higher-pitched vocals and loads of grooves in the music indicate a band that stays true to the spirit of the groundwork laid down my Mr. Swan and DGD. If youÆre wondering whether or not the released singles from the album are a reasonable indicator of most of the material present on the record, wonder no longer. The music given to us in advance of the albums release is a fair indicator of the great quality of the album as a whole. æOmniphobiaÆ demonstrates the huge choruses that Donovan Molero seems to nail with ease and the colorful and cascading guitar-work of Will Swan and Sergio Medina. æPsychosis SuccumbingÆ demonstrates the very capable bass skills of Michael Franzino and the tasteful, tight drumwork of Joe Arrington. æBedrootsÆ does all of the above and rounds out the three singles released so far quite well, despite being the weakest of the three tracks. There may be more singles released before the album drop on August 5th, but if there werenÆt it would make a fair amount of sense. These songs tell you enough about the music to sell you on what you havenÆt heard yet. Now, if youÆre not impressed with the songs released so far and youÆre still on the fence about listening to the album when it releases, some of the best tracks on the album arenÆt singles. æCoordinate LoveÆ is an absolute banger of a track that has upbeat grooves for days, the title track and opener æStay LostÆ goes from being a slow, melancholic stroll to a thrilling explosion of energy multiple times over its nearly five minute run-time while managing to not slip up along the way and the closer æStay ScaredÆ has a re-occurring riff thatÆs sound gigantic and makes it a powerful closing track. The only tracks that may be seen as weak links in Stay Lostæs chain are æFoxholes and DeitiesÆ and æBedrootsÆ, due to either staying too long on a particular section or meandering. Stay Lost sees Sianvar settling into a sound that is both familiar and exciting. The irony of the album title is palpable as it really seems like theyÆve found themselves with their debut full-length. As a fan of all these bands individually, it feels wonderful to have a distillation of what they do best. This is music that you can get lost and stay lost in."
