The Solo Project, formed in late 1998 in Scottsdale, Arizona, was led by singer-songwriter Philip Trapp on guitar and vocals. Initially a pop-punk trio, Trapp teamed up with bassist Matt Trojan and drummer John Marcus. However, Marcus left after just two months and was quickly replaced by drummer Mark Stephens. From 1999 to 2002, The Solo Project gained recognition with over 100 Phoenix-area shows and two short Arizona-California tours. Adding guitarist and co-vocalist Mike Schey, they shifted from pop-punk to alt-rock and emo. In 2000, Stephens was replaced by drummer Marty Welker, forming The Solo Project's most prolific lineup of Trapp, Trojan, Schey, and Welker. Together, the quartet recorded 2000's æAutobiography,Æ 2001Æs æLaurels,Æ and their only major album, æBend/Break,Æ released by Rise Records in 2002. æLaurelsÆ and æBend/BreakÆ are darker stylistically, with metalcore and post-punk influences at the fore. By 2002, Trojan was replaced by bassist Pierce Simpson; Schey joined The Format, a rising act led by local contemporaries Nate Ruess and Sam Means. Despite a record deal, conflicts led to The Solo Project's dissolution. Schey didn't perform in the final lineup, which included Trapp and Welker with temporary replacements. After a couple of shows, Trapp joined Minneapolis transplants The Stereo before forming End Conversation and First Natural. Though short-lived, The Solo ProjectÆs workùespecially æBend/BreakÆùremains a highlight of early-2000s Phoenix rock. ............................................................................
