The film takes place in the gang ridden neighborhoods of Los Angeles: late-1980s South Central Los Angeles, Echo Park, Westlake and East Los Angeles. The film centers on Bob Hodges (Duvall), an experienced Los Angeles Police Department C.R.A.S.H. officer, and his rookie partner, Danny McGavin (Penn), who try to stop the gang violence between the Bloods, the Crips, and Hispanic street gangs. Colors relaunched Hopper as a director 19 years after Easy Rider, and inspired discussion over its depiction of gang life and gang violence. The Colors soundtrack, propelled by an exploitative cop film and the following media frenzy about movie violence and the glamorization of criminals. Most of these tracks had been previously released, but here now were such tracks as Ice-T's brutal title track, Big Daddy Kane's "Raw" and MC Shan's "A Mind Is A Terrible Thing To Waste" in one friendly package, and suddenly middle America knew about the Crips and the Bloods. Highlights also include Decadent Dub Team's "Six Gun" (with the film's star Sean Penn on uncredited vocals), remixed by Dr. Dre, as well as Coldcut's infamous remix of Eric B. & Rakim's "Paid in Full". You also gotta give it up for Marley Marl, who lace the production of three now-classic gems on here. The film takes place in the gang ridden neighborhoods of Los Angeles: late-1980s South Central Los Angeles, Echo Park, Westlake and East Los Angeles. The film centers on Bob Hodges (Duvall), an experienced Los Angeles Police Department C.R.A.S.H. officer, and his rookie partner, Danny McGavin (Penn), who try to stop the gang violence between the Bloods, the Crips, and Hispanic street gangs. Colors relaunched Hopper as a director 19 years after Easy Rider, and inspired discussion over its depiction of gang life and gang violence. The Colors soundtrack, propelled by an exploitative cop film and the following media frenzy about movie violence and the glamorization of criminals. Most of these tracks had been previously released, but here now were such tracks as Ice-T's brutal title track, Big Daddy Kane's "Raw" and MC Shan's "A Mind Is A Terrible Thing To Waste" in one friendly package, and suddenly middle America knew about the Crips and the Bloods. Highlights also include Decadent Dub Team's "Six Gun" (with the film's star Sean Penn on uncredited vocals), remixed by Dr. Dre, as well as Coldcut's infamous remix of Eric B. & Rakim's "Paid in Full". The film takes place in the gang ridden neighborhoods of Los Angeles: late-1980s South Central Los Angeles, Echo Park, Westlake and East Los Angeles. The film centers on Bob Hodges (Duvall), an experienced Los Angeles Police Department C.R.A.S.H. officer, and his rookie partner, Danny McGavin (Penn), who try to stop the gang violence between the Bloods, the Crips, and Hispanic street gangs. Colors relaunched Hopper as a director 19 years after Easy Rider, and inspired discussion over its depiction of gang life and gang violence. The Colors soundtrack, propelled by an exploitative cop film and the following media frenzy about movie violence and the glamorization of criminals. Most of these tracks had been previously released, but here now were such tracks as Ice-T's brutal title track, Big Daddy Kane's "Raw" and MC Shan's "A Mind Is A Terrible Thing To Waste" in one friendly package, and suddenly middle America knew about the Crips and the Bloods. Highlights also include Decadent Dub Team's "Six Gun" (with the film's star Sean Penn on uncredited vocals), remixed by Dr. Dre, as well as Coldcut's infamous remix of Eric B. & Rakim's "Paid in Full". You also gotta give it up for Marley Marl, who lace the production of three now-classic gems on here.
