R E L E A S E ] ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ "Cambodia is situated in the southern part of the ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Indo-Chinese peninsula, and is surrounded by ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Vietnam, Laos, Thailand and the gulf of Thailand. ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ The Khmer form by far the majority of a population ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ that also includes the Cham (Muslims along the ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ banks of the Mekong and the TonlΘ Sap) and other ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ ethnic minorities scattered about the mountain ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ regions. ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ The Khmer people were at the origin of the world ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ famous temples of Angkor, built between the ninth ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ and the fourteenth centuries, buildings considered ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ to be part of the great heritage of humanity. Khmer ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ music is less well known, despite the reputation of ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ the royal dances that are associated with it. It ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ does, however, deserve to be treated with as much ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ respect as the architecture or the sculpture, ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ especially as both the latter reveal the antiquity ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ and the continuity of the music, for scenes of ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ music-making and of musical instruments similar to ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ those used even today can be seen in the ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ bas-reliefs of Angkor. To be true, the vicissitudes ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ of history have not always been favourable, ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ especially during the period of the Khmer Rouge ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ (from 1975 to 1979), in the course of which a ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ considerable number of artistes were driven into ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ exile or, worse, were massacred or annihilated by ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ sickness and poverty. Since the 1980s the process ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ of restoration and of reconstruction has been ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ taking place, thanks to the Cambodian ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ themselves, international help and UNESCO. Cambodian ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ musicians and musicologists such as Yun Khean ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Theara, Sam-Ang Sam or Keo Dorivan have made an ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ invaluable contribution to the knowledge of Khmer ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ musical art. The music and the dance teachers who ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ have survived transmit their art to the younger ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ generations, in particular within the framework of ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ the Royal University of Fine Arts in Phnom Penh or ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ the Buddhist temple of Wat Rajabo in Siem Reap. In ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ addition, traditional dance and music spectacles ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ are organised by certain private establishments, ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ sometimes in a remarkable manner, as for example in ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ the Apsara Theatre of the Angkor Village hotel in ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Siem Reap. Unfortunately some damage has proved ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ irreparable, and the practice of music has been ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ affected by the economic context and the often ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ baneful intrusion of the media. Yet Khmer music ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ carries on nonetheless, in its own way, in the ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ lands of the diaspora (notably the USA and France) ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ but mainly in Cambodia itself, where it has been ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ reborn from the ashes in all its splendour, as the ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ present recordings will demonstrate, made as they ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ were in 2003 and 2004 in Phnom Penh, at the Royal ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ University of Fine Arts, at Siem Reap, near the ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Banteay Srey temple of Angkor, in the Apsara ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Theatre and in the Buddhist Centre of Wat Rajabo. ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Track 1 Si nuorn by the pin peat orchestra of Wat ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Rajabo ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ The vung phleng pinn peat is the principal court ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ orchestra, its antiquity attested by the ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ representations of musical instruments in the ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ bas-reliefs of the temples of Angkor (Angkor Wat in ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ particular). It is this orchestra that accompanies ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ the royal dances, the masked theatre and the shadow ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ theatre spectacles no less than the religious ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ ceremonies. It also performs, as is the case here, ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ in straight concerts, within the precincts of the ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Buddhist temple Wat Rajabo. It includes the ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ following instruments: ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ - srala∩, an oboe in hardwood with six holes and ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ quadruple reed ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ - roneat ek, a xylophone with 21 keys (upper ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ register) ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ - roneat thung, a xylophone with 16 keys (lower ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ register); ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ - kong vong toch, a circular set of 16 bossed ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ gongs(upper register) ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ - kong vong thomm, a circular set of 16 bossed ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ gongs(lower register) ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ - roneat dek, a metallophone with 21 keys in bronze ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ -skor thomm, a pair of two large double-skinned ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ drums, struck with two wooden sticks ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ - sampho, a double-skinned drum, struck with the ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ hands ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ - chhing, a pair of small cymbals ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ The musicians are all young pupils who received ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ their training in the Buddhist temple of Wat Rajabo ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ in Siem Reap, from the old masters who had survived ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ the period 1975-1979. ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Recording made in January 2003 in Siem Reap. ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Track 2 Wedding orchestra with slek ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ A small orchestra composed of handicapped persons, ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ is performing different airs from the repertoire of ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ wedding music, close to the Banteay Srey temple in ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Angkor. It consists of krapeu or takhΘ, a standing ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ zither with three strings (one a drone) sounded ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ with a wooden plectrum; khimm toch, a zither with ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ 14 double or triple strings, struck with a pair of ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ sticks with slit ends (similar to the Indian ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ santur);tror sau thom, a two-string fiddle with ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ cylindrical bamboo body (high register);tror ou, a ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ two-string fiddle with coconut shell body (low ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ register); chhing, a pair of small cymbals; skor ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ arakk, a one-skin drum; slek, a leaf. Melody ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ produced by a special way of blowing the slek ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ between the lips, sounds like whistling. ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Recording made in January 2004 in Angkor. ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Track 3 Tayay nork by the R.U.F.A mohori orchestra ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Founded in 1965 under the High Patronage of King ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Norodom Sihanouk, devastated ten years later by the ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Khmer Rouge regime, and then reopened in January ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ 1981, the Royal University of Fine Arts in Phnom ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Penh houses the National Conservatory where music ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ and dance are taught. ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ The vung phleng mohori is an orchestral formation ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ that is more often to be found at secular ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ celebrations, although it can and does perform at ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ court ceremonies. It consists, here, of the ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ teachers and pupils of the Royal University for the ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Fine Arts who play Tayay nork with the following ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ instruments: ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ - roneat ek, a xylophone with 21 keys, by the ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ master Phreung Phroun ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ - roneat thung, a xylophone with 16 keys, by the ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ master Chum Kong ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ - krapeu or takhΘ, a standing zither with three ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ strings (one a drone) sounded with a wooden ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ plectrum, by the master Ek Son ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ - khloy, a straight flute with six holes and one ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ back hole (for the thumb) ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ - tror sau thom, a two-string fiddle with ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ cylindrical bamboo body (high register) ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ - tror ou, a two-string fiddle with coconut shell ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ body (low register); ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ - tror thomm, a large two-string fiddle with ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ sculpted wood resonator (of recent design and ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ manufacture) ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ - khimm toch, a zither with 14 double or triple ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ strings, struck with a pair of sticks with slit ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ ends (similar to the Indian santur); ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ - thaun, a single-skinned drum, coupled to a ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ rumanea, a frame drum; ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ - chhing,a pair of small cymbals ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Recording made in January 2003 in Phnom Penh. ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Track 4 Mean rong reay by the vung phleng kar boran ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ of Wat Rajabo ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Marriage ceremonies are very important events in ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Cambodia. In earlier days they would last for seven ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ days and seven nights, then they were reduced to ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ three days and three nights, and today they last ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ hardly more than a day and a night. One type of ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ orchestra, the vung phleng kar boran, probably the ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ most popular and the most widespread in Cambodia, ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ is expecially attached to this ceremony. The ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ instruments employed are the following: ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ - pey prabauh, a bamboo oboe with double reed and ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ eight holes, one of which is covered with a ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ membrane (kazoo) ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ - two tror Khmer, a three-string fiddle ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ - khse diev, a monochord with calabash resonator ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ - chapey dang veng, a large, two-string lute ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ - two skor arakk, open, single-skinned drums ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ - chhing, a pair of cymbals ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ The eight musicians here perform mean rong reay ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ (the chicken's cackle),under the conducting of ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ master Man Mein who plays himself the tror khmer. ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Recording made in January 2004 in Siem Reap. ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Track 05 Reamker's airs by the pinn peat orchestra ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ of Wat Rajabo ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ The vung pheng pinn peat orchestra is the same as ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ that heard in track 01. Here, in the presence of an ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ assembly of dignitaries and students from the ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ monastery of Wat Rajabo, it plays a concert medley ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ of airs from the Reamker(see track 10):prathomm ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ ,lear, smeu, cheut, ching cheut. ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Recording made in January 2003 in Siem Reap. ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Track 06. Som pong lom by the vung phleng kar boran ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ orchestra of Wat Rajabo ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ The marriage orchestra vung phleng kar boran, ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ similar to that heard in track 4, is placed under ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ the direction of maestro Man Main who plays the ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ tror Khmer (a three-string fiddle) alongside his ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ pupils. The latter play, respectively, the pey ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ prabauh (a double-reeded oboe), the khse muoy (a ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ monochord), the chapey dang veng (a large lute with ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ two strings) and two skor arrak (open, ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ single-skinned laced drums). The neak chrieng ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ (singer) is one of the percussionists. ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Recording made in January 2004 in Siem Reap. ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Track 7 Two songs by the pinn peat orchestra of Wat ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Rajabo ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ The same ensemble as that heard in tracks 01 and ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ 05. The vung phleng pinn peat of the Wat Rajabo ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ here plays two pieces from the classical ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ repertory:orptey srock khmer( heart of Khmer) and ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ len souy(for dancing) ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Recording made in January 2004 in Siem Reap. ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Track 8 Wedding orchestra with slek ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ The same orchestra as in track 02,plays a folk ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ tune, near the Banteay Srey ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Recording made in January 2004 in Angkor. ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Track 09 Khmer dombanh and Bey jorn by the mohori ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ orchestra of R.U.F.A ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Khmer domban and Bey jorn are performed here by the ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ same orchestra (vung phleng mohori) of the Royal ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ University of Fine Arts(R.U.F.A) as described in ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ track 03. ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Track 10 Music for the Reamker ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ The Reamker is the Khmer version of the Ramayana, ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ the famous Indian epic, just as the Phralak Phraram ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ is the Laotian version (Prophet 40). It differs, ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ however, from the Indian Ramayana in several ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ respects, notably in that the characters of the ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Cambodian epic are not so much gods come down from ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ heaven as human heroes whose names, moreover, have ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ been given a Khmer identity. Rama becomes PrΘah ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ RΘam; Lakshmana, PrΘah Leak; Ravana, Reap; Sita, ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ NΘang SΘda. The Reamker, its antiquity attested by ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ the images in the twelfth century bas-reliefs of ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Angkor Wat and of Banteay Samre, provides the ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ principal subject matter in the repertory of court ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ dances. The art of the Khmer dance lakhaon kbach ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ boran, at heart originally a sacred dance, has had ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ a long history, in the course of which periods of ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ fulfilment have been followed by much darker ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ moments, with sometimes the risk of distortion or ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ even of disappearance. Today it lives on in part ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ beyond the borders of Cambodia (in the countries of ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ the diaspora), though especially in Cambodia, in ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Phnom Penh, within the Royal University of Fine ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Arts, where the old masters hand the tradition on ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ to the young. The role of the royal family has been ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ in this regard of capital importance. The current ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Minister of Culture and Fine Arts is Princess ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Norodom Bupha Devi, herself an erstwhile star ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ dancer of the Royal Ballet. ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Owing to its many world tours, the Royal Ballet of ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Cambodia has met with signal success beyond the ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ frontiers of the home country. It was in 1906 that ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ King Sisovath took with him, for the first time, ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Khmer dancers to the West (to Paris, to the PrΘ ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Catelan Theatre). The first tour was such a success ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ that a fresh performance had to be given that same ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ evening in order to satisfy an impatient audience. ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ The Khmer dance is truly a very great art form ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ which, in spite of its complexity, is quite capable ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ of attracting the layman by virtue of the elegance ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ of its movements, the beauty of the women, the ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ costumes, the jewelry and the brilliance of the ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ masks. Nonetheless, in order to appreciate it ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ thoroughly, it is indispensable to understand the ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ significance of every gesture, every position of ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ the head, the arms, the legs, the fingers. Only ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ then can a true connoisseur follow all the details ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ of the action in this complete musical spectacle, ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ including as it does mime, dance and theatre. ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ The Reamker is an epic that requires several whole ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ days if it is to be given in its totality. Only a ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ few sequences can be presented in a normal ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ performance. Here, NΘang SΘda is prisoner of the ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ demon RΘap. PrΘah Ream and his brother PrΘah Leak ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ followed by Hanuman, the chief of the white ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ monkeys, will fight together against the troops of ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ the demon RΘap and finally deliver NΘang SΘda. All ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ the roles are held by women (including the ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ masculine parts) except for the monkeys (played by ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ men). The action is guided by the pinn peat ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ orchestra (similar to that heard in track 01) of ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ the Apsara Theatre, notably the skor thomm and ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ sampho drums, while the narrative is sung by the ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ naek chrieng(the young vocalists and the soloist ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Sitha Sok). ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Recording made in January 2004 in Siem Reap. ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ With the help of Teruo Jinnai and Suon Bun Rith of ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ UNESCO, Yun Khean Theara and Keo Dorivan of the ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Royal University for the Fine Arts in Phnom Penh, ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ of the Apsara Theatre of Angkor Village and of the ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ Wat Rajabo in Siem Reap." ▓▌ ▓████▓▌ ▓▌ ░ ▓████▓▌ ▓▌ ▓ ▐█████▓█ [ A B O U T .
