And there's plenty of variety, from the timeless gloss of Ryuichi Sakamoto's "Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence" to the sugary folk-pop of Okinawa's Nenes. The Ryukyu Underground bring a modern perspective, while David Darling's celebrated collaboration with the Wulu Bunun offers a different take on mixing East and West. China's FM3 show that plenty of interesting new sounds are brewing in the East, and "Hannyashingyo" shows a Buddhist guitarist searching his way around the world. Meanwhile, no record covering this part of the world would be complete without Shoukichi Kina - and this makes sure he's included.
