Every dark ambient album that doesnÆt have ▓ªª ªª▓ a linear or abstract theme, that doesnÆt have a discernible thread, that doesnÆt in some way ▓ªª ªª▓ present itself as a self-tied package plumped with consideration and significant import ▓ªª ªª▓ seems to fall below the line for me. Promoting such an opinion is veering dangerously into ▓ªª ªª▓ the arms of pretentiousness, but at the same time thatÆs what happens when you listen to a ▓ªª ªª▓ lot of a particular genre. ItÆs like eating from the same cafΘ over and over again: if they ▓ªª ªª▓ change even the slightest ingredient in your time-honoured stock lunch choice itÆs not going ▓ªª ªª▓ to go unnoticed. And these days, as dark ambient is turning corners into the realms of the ▓ªª ªª▓ experimental, dub and modern classical, the pressure is on more than ever for the ▓ªª ªª▓ traditional side of the genre to come up with something special every time. ▓ªª ªª▓ ▓ªª ªª▓ No label should know more about this than Cyclic Law. IÆve been a massive fan of their ▓ªª ªª▓ output for years and to me, nobody knows their proverbial onions more than Frederic ArbourÆs ▓ªª ªª▓ sole enterprise, crafted lovingly from ten years of dedication and expertise in the area. I ▓ªª ªª▓ was especially excited at the prospect of a new release from Vestigial, whose last album ▓ªª ªª▓ ôTranslucent Communionö saw the light of day way back in 2008 when the production factory at ▓ªª ªª▓ Cold Meat Industry was far more oiled and prolific, which can hardly be said these days with ▓ªª ªª▓ any release being spat out of the gates half-chewed and promoted half-heartedly. This is not ▓ªª ªª▓ the case for Cyclic Law who seem to be in their prime and at the top of their game, with ▓ªª ªª▓ successful release after release delivered gleaming and galvanised to the expectant dark ▓ªª ªª▓ ambient-awaiting thralls. And if most people canÆt wait to get their hands on a CL album the ▓ªª ªª▓ day it hits the record shops, IÆm the woollied Thermos-bearer bunking outside the night ▓ªª ªª▓ before the gates are even due to clank open. ▓ªª ªª▓ ▓ªª ªª▓ So IÆm slightly disappointed in this new offering from both Vestigial and Cyclic Law, both ▓ªª ªª▓ in terms of consistency and imagination. This work, which comprises four û count them, four ▓ªª ªª▓ û different source releases on one album seems to be born out of necessity rather than fresh ▓ªª ªª▓ creative spark. Solar/Aeon, which at least makes no apologies for its ingredients, is made ▓ªª ªª▓ up of the Solar and Aeon EPs released through New Sun Recordings in 2007 and 2009 as well as ▓ªª ªª▓ two additional tracks, ôSubstormÆs Curtainsö and ôPale Statues of Nowhereö which were both ▓ªª ªª▓ released as compilation numbers for Saar Maas and Old Europa Cafe. As a result the whole ▓ªª ªª▓ thing is a rather flung-together gesture and makes me wonder what the hell Vestigial has ▓ªª ªª▓ been doing since 2008. Italy canÆt be completely devoid of dark ambient inspiration, IÆm ▓ªª ªª▓ sure there are plenty of disused factories, bunkers, abandoned houses and exposed areas of ▓ªª ªª▓ umber grassland behind chain-link fences which can provide ideas for new material. ▓ªª ªª▓ ▓ªª ªª▓ As a result of the different sources behind this release, the cohesion factor is absent, ▓ªª ªª▓ with the record throwing us different kinds of lines from the same hand, be that dark ▓ªª ªª▓ ambient or drone or industrial, and in some places thereÆs a martial feel too. Fear not, ▓ªª ªª▓ itÆs all highly professionally done, thereÆs no doubt whatsoever that when Vestigial does ▓ªª ªª▓ create and heÆs not sitting somewhere in mid-Europe in the middle of a creative blackout, ▓ªª ªª▓ the results are very decent indeed. The tracks that make up Aeon in particular are the most ▓ªª ªª▓ thought-provoking and emotive, with ôDagda Risingö and ôThe Grey Constellationö being ▓ªª ªª▓ especially haunting and ominous pieces, layered with sheet upon sheet of texture. Things get ▓ªª ªª▓ a little busier for the Solar section of the album as weÆre left to inhabit a crushingly ▓ªª ªª▓ dark and brittle void, too opaque and impenetrable for the sun or suns outside to pierce ▓ªª ªª▓ through, but the cracks and specks of noisy sound that speckle the aural field hint at their ▓ªª ªª▓ presence somewhere. If this is indeed VestigialÆs concept itÆs a nicely played-out one ▓ªª ªª▓ indeed û the Solar side being a distant dream or reverie as sonically weÆre locked inside a ▓ªª ªª▓ dark, unforgiving vacuum of ghoulish emptiness. The album therefore bears a striking ▓ªª ªª▓ resemblance to three major influences, early-mid period Raison dÆΩtre, Gustaf Hildebrand and ▓ªª ªª▓ Lustmord, but thereÆs still enough of VestigialÆs own ideas in the mix to make it an ▓ªª ªª▓ inspiration rather than an outright homage to both. ▓ªª ªª▓ ▓ªª ªª▓ This is one of those situations where the whole isnÆt greater than the sum of its parts. ▓ªª ªª▓ Individually each track is a highly well-constructed piece and Vestigial is no stranger to ▓ªª ªª▓ shaping fine dark ambient tracks with depth, pace and feeling. However, due to the large ▓ªª ªª▓ enough of different arenas things have been drafted in from, Solar/Aeon doesnÆt really have ▓ªª ªª▓ the right feel of consistency running through it, and though on first listen it might seem ▓ªª ªª▓ like quite a complex and intense venture, further experiences will show it to be little more ▓ªª ªª▓ than over-busy. ThereÆs still a good amount of material here to please most listeners, ▓ªª ªª▓ especially those less familiar with the genre overall, but Vestigial needs to get producing ▓ªª ªª▓ a work that has a temporal mind all of its own, rather than those from different periods ▓ªª ªª▓ that show a release like this up.
