I have been a big fan of Running Wild back then, with Rolf being someone who always took the whole image pretty serious. Other acts like Alestorm have worked with exaggerating humor, going for a more comical ôswaying to and froö approach. While these kind of stuff is normally occupied by heavy/power metal acts, black and death metal bands normally go for Viking themes. Yarr are a band from the Nahetal Klangschmiede circle, with the two main members also being part of other outfits like N²r Gata, Immorior or Stardust. With Yarr they are playing out their funny side, and while I am not the biggest fan of something laughable when it comes to music their full length debut ôDie Stadtpark Chronikenö is a more than solid slab of black and folk metal. The combination of rhythm and lead guitars is one of the big highlights here as the balance between straight rocking chords and catchy harmonies is nearly flawless. Short soloing parts are used to interconnect the different sections of the songs. Often tracks are completely slowed down, with ambient and folky moments building the bridge to the next riff attack lending the whole music a very accessible nature. There is also some double-drum action, and despite the omnipresent accordion the instrumentation is heavy as feck. Yarr do not shy away to use all form of chops, from traditional ones to some more modern sounding staccato attacks. Thankfully the lads have a pretty good sense of piecing all those elements together in the right way so that the tracks are not just various pieces of music randomly tacked together, but real and coherent songs. The flow of the album is great and as a listener you are going through a lot of highs and lows. Some of the lead harmonies are amazing, reminding even of some Gothenburg greats. Each song has a certain character, like single chapters of one complete story. Some of the chorus parts are pretty simplistic, which fits to this kind of music and the overall concept. The vocals are varied, with screams, growls, choirs and some clean passages. As a listener you sometimes feel like sitting in a tavern, with the drunken crowd shouting and arguing while the band is playing in the background. There is a certain story running through the lyrics, something about the pirates looking for bottle deposits. While this is of course a bit goofy I personally get a slight steampunk feeling when looking at the picture, no idea why. The production is really good, which is something I expected being familiar with the other bands from Nahetal Klangschmiede.
