Dr. Death 3:41 39:09 I suppose it should be expected of a group called Nasty Surgeons that they use a bunch of rather blunt instruments to craft compositions of pain and terror, but nonetheless IÆm surprised at just how brutal parts of this second full-length are. Out of a small collection of death metal CDs I have in rotation in the car, this is the one that sees me driving quickest to work and feeling most exhausted when I get back. The cause of that is not excessive pace but the percussive bludgeoning kept up for much of the 11 song total, not to mention some little tasters from grindcore that maximize damage with the suddenness that they arrive. Turning Infectious Stench up too loud makes the car shake, letÆs put it like that. These Spaniards do not especially subscribe to either of the more classic schools of death metal, though itÆs worth noting that they include hardly any melody or groove in their assault, which in my experience makes them more of a candidate for comparison to US bands that firstly pulled the genre into heavier waters. However, they will forever be linked to Carcass instead, because the themes overlap to a large extent, all the songs incorporating medical terminology or ideas relating to rotting corpses, as the introductory piece æEx Puterfactione GeneratiÆ makes clear with the snippet ôfrom putrefaction we come, towards putrefaction we goö. As if the next song, æSmell the CarcassÆ, didnÆt make that clear. A few more samples are moulded well into other songs, giving brief breaks from blasts and double-bass for necessarily calmer sections, which I find thankful given the ferocious sonic profile of the album. These surgeons donÆt hang around for the anaesthetic to kick in, just go straight to the bone saw, although considerately finish every song in 3 or 4 minutes. That means Infectious Stench provides a dense forest of skin, flesh, arteries, and bone to cut through in order to pick out the tastiest bits. ItÆs not hard to tell songs apart exactly, but many of them dwell in a constant state of chaos, especially during any prolonged fast section. For someone like me who likes a bit of breathing space in their death metal, IÆm drawn to cuts like æIn PiecesÆ with its strong grooving sections, or the rather epic lead break in the middle of the title track. In general though, Nasty Surgeons control the pace well, interspersing blitzkrieg charges with slightly sinister or simply massive heavy breaks of chords, rarely playing a single section more than twice, so although itÆs all death thereÆs at least no death by repetition. Beyond that, a few emphasized vocals - for instance the title section of æImpaled, Crucified and BeheadedÆ - help to stick various moments in the memory. On the whole, Infectious Stench is a boon to fans of destructive death metal, in particular those who donÆt like feeling comfortable in their own skin. Although itÆs more the lyrics that are creepy than the music itself, the band operate with a minimum of atmosphere that assists in making a more encompassing experience, and at least a handful of riffs get smashed through my skull each time I put the album on.
