Tom Vetterli, Ron Broder, and Diego Rapacchietti are now back with nine new songs, plus an intro, all of which are summarized as ôDissonance Theory.ö What the trio delivers connects directly to what the band delivered more than three decades ago. As in the early days, the new album combines heaviness with clockwork precision and a great feel for superb songs. ôOxymoronö is the eerie opener, and ôConsequenceö is the first sonic blast. ôConsequenceö brings back the sound of the Æ90s with a contemporary touch. Massive riff attacksalternate with acoustic moments, all presented with technical perfection, as does ôSacrificial Lamb.ö Despite its various layers, the song sounds like a metal monolith bursting with creativity. At a moderate pace, ôSacrificial Lambö unveils its dark bloom when you listen to ôDissonance Theoryö for the first time. ôCrisium Boundö is a pulsating song that picks up the dark vibe from the previous track, before the heavily pounding ôSymmetryö unleashes its addictive groove. The song reflects all the Coroner trademarks while spreading a modern vibe with a superbly crafted guitar solo. The calmer start of ôThe Lawö contrasts with the previous song, providing a peaceful moment that turns into the next gloomy riff monster. This song impresses with its riff power and gives you the shivers with its sinister chorus. ôTransparent Eyeö is a slower-paced riff behemoth with an evil grin. It is the perfect example of how Coroner combines a technically sophisticated song structure with heaviness and modern-day melodic features, allowing for an immediate connection and lasting listening pleasure. The grim riffs of ôTrinityö lead to ôRenewalö with its wrecking ballûlike start. There is little flourish at the beginning. Instead, the riff hits you right in the face, and with its aggressive foundation, Coroner shows off their musical prowess. ôRenewalö is, in a way, also what the album represents. While sticking to their roots and trademark sound, Coroner brings their unique features into the 21st century. Referring to their roots while embracing the present is what ôDissonance Theoryö expresses through each song of this thrilling tracklist. It should not surprise anyone that Coroner maintains a high quality level until the end. The closer, ôProlonging,ö is another jaw-dropping moment. I did not expect to hear the sound of the Hammond organ on this album, but it fits perfectly into the bandÆs musical vision. Coroner is back with full force. Three decades without a new album was a tough time for fans, but the good news is that ôDissonance Theoryö is a stunning new album from a veteran band. Coroner in 2025 exude strength and energy, with an overall atmosphere of creativity and happiness from beginning to end.
