IV: Catharsis 9:48 35:25 TrollbandÆs Woolgatherings, released in 2023, is another mystical black metal philosophical opus right out of the frozen norths of America. I donÆt know what it is about certain Canadian Black metal bands to bring this moody, introspective lyrical approach to their music û Woods of Ypres certainly loved doing thisùbut either way, Woolgatherings features some ôinner journeyö elements that are as evocative as their cover art. ôWhat about the music?ö I hear you ask. Well, there are four tracks so we will cover each one in turn, but I will say if youÆre not focusing on the lyrics this album is fairly standard melodic black metal fare with some slight extras which we will go into. The opening track is ôDualitiesö. It is somber and frantically paced, underscoring the moody lyrics (a lot of the objective quality comes from the synergy). The music repeats the same riffs at several places, and the rasping growls are anguished here when there isnÆt ominous chanting vocals during some of the calmer sections. Overall, very melodic, probably one of the weaker tracks on the album but in terms of the choices for varying up the speed or tone it foreshadows a lot of what is to come. ôNorthern Sonö is next. More angsty lyrics, but this time the Black Metal has a rawer, ôcolderö sound û as you would expect the Canadian winters to beget. There is some keyboards laced throughout the piece, and you get some more variation in terms of riffs. Acoustic passages throughout the song, overall ôNorthern Sonö is both the least risky but also the best song on the album in terms of strict genre convention. It hits home if you focus on the lyrics, mostly because the music brilliantly plays to the mood but this time the music feels like it has more knockout power. The next track adds some folksy interludes and continues developing the keyboards. ôWoolgatheringö is another high point for this album, and features some more philosophical lyrics with some shifts and changes within the music that keep the track interesting. There is less intensity here but sufficient speed and variations that it creates a different sort of intensity. Its the Venom strategy minus the aggression. Closing off the album, we have another upbeat track where finally the folksy strings and chanting vocals rear their head in fullness. ôCatharsisö doesnÆt feature ominous embellishments or somber vocals, rather that twangy, soulful, chanting a lot of folk singers do. However, a lot of the melodies and acoustic interludes are heavily reminiscent of SuidakraÆs Caledonia era releases, or potentially Wartunes as there are no bagpipes. It is honestly by the merit of this track I would call this folk metal. But it is folk Metal not Folk metal. The emphasis isnÆt so heavy on the folk as other bands. Woolgatherings is a decent release, the heady mysticism and philosophy with some undertones of folk music is very reminiscent of another Canadian band Woods of Ypresùmoreso their earlier work though. For the lyrics, I recommend this album as a nice delve into the abyss of the self. But as a Metal release IÆd say its not simple enough to appreciate in the background. In fact, the nuance and subtleties make it a little boring if you donÆt sit down and quiet yourself for a little. I say this from experience. This is a 2023 album, and my first try to run it as background music doesnÆt make for as enjoyable listen as when I sat down and really focused on it on subsequent listens. So really, the album may grow on you, and its decent enough when you follow it, but its not easy listening and not for everyone. I will probably look forward to see what else Trollband puts out, especially on Friday nights where work is done and I can pour myself a nice smooth drink and listen to something as mellow. -- Trollband are a band from Vancouver B.C, Canada that has had music reviewed before in this zine and on this recording plays a very melodic and epic mixture of pagan black and folk metal and this is a review of their 2024 album "Woolgetherings" which was released by Vegvisor Distribution. Dark soundscapes and clear vocals start off the album before going into more of a heavier and melodic direction. All of the musical instruments also have a very powerful sound to them while all of the tracks are also very long and epic in length and the harsh vocals also add in a lot of high pitched black metal screams. When the music speeds up a great amount of tremolo picking and blast beats can be heard which also gives the songs more of a raw feeling. Throughout the recording you can also hear a good mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts along with some elements of folk music also being utilized at times. Acoustic guitars and synths can also be heard on a couple of songs and the solos and leads are also done in a very melodic style along with a couple of tracks also adding in a small amount of spoken word parts. The production sounds very dark and raw while the lyrics cover nature, death and contemplation themes.
